He broke the rules, and bet on a team he was managing.
Great player, maybe the greatest, but terribly addicted gambler. It's not like he took peds, which doesn't prevent HOF apparently, but this is bigger.
As a fan of the reds in the 70's, I will say he and those teams were so much fun to watch.

This is one of the typical canned bs responses about the issue. He didn’t cheat, that is the one rule you don’t break. There are cheaters in the HOF. Hell even the “gentlemen’s” game of golf routinely has gambling in it, yet no one cares.
This isn’t black Sox gambling and cheating, this was just a guy who bet on games who happen to also managed.
The ban was and is driven by some big egos at the top who refuse to let another ego get his due.

FTR I grew up a Big Red Machine fan from the late 60's until baseball became a shite show in early 2000s.

Exactly. Breaks the rules and lies about it until he thought he had a chance to get in the HOF and then he comes clean. Sorry Pete.
Hell the PED players have a more legit claim to the HOF. They didn't break any rules when they were juicing, let alone the Holy Grail of MLB rules.
