I remember seeing them in pet stores all the time when I was a kid. You know anybody who ever owned one?

Only six posts in three weeks, so I think you might have already gotten your wish

NO ONE and I mean NO ONE has ever had a pet alligator. Just like they have never owned a pet Rattlesnake or Cottonmouth. They might have them in captivity but they aren't your friking friend nor your pet.
BTW, what you saw in the so called pet steres were South American Camen, not the native Alligator.

I've had some small ones we caught in the spillway and then released in random places.

No dude, I have seen a pet alligator. It had painted toenails and all. On a swamp boat. It walked around the boat with no tape on its snout, and would let the people pet it and all.
This one looks like a pet LINK
No tape.
I have seen some that were 10th+ generation raised in captivity that were pretty docile.
Sure I wouldn't stick my hand in its mouth, but the definition of pet is loose. Just like the girl that used to bring her pet tiger to LSU games.

No, they were his pets...walked around the house and whatnot. He'd keep them until they were 1.5 feet or so, then my uncle would go "take care of it"

My dad caught one fishing in Florida and gave it to my brothers. They had it in a little pen and aquarium at night. It died when the pest control man sprayed it. He was buried in the back yard next to a hamster and a hermit crab. He has a head stone and everything.

Seriously. I saw a documentary where this old guy had one (about a 6 footer) that he would hold in his arms like it was a big dog while he sat in his rocking chair telling his grand kids stories.

Indeed, not all of us can spend our money on taxidermy and stuffed coyotes made into lamps whilst bragging about the Founders' suites.
