Finally some truth from someone inside an athletics office...
quote:

Some people have incorrectly framed the issue as safety versus revenue generation. The simple fact is that reality lies somewhere in the middle. As leaders, we remain committed to safety first. As I outlined in my letter on June 25, 2020, we are working hard to develop and implement mitigation strategies to reduce the risk to players and fans at events this fall. More details about these plans will be provided in the near future.
We must also be cognizant of the absolute need to generate revenues to sustain our long-term operations. We felt it was important to be transparent about the financial realities in college athletics today to add some context to the discussion. Although I am most-familiar with our financial situation, many peers have shared similar stories in regards to their financial projections.

quote:

If we are unable to play sports this fall, the athletics department would incur approximately $40 million in unfunded expenses in the next six months.

quote:

In addition, the financial disruption caused by not having a football season would have an overwhelming negative impact on the safety and well-being of the 475 student-athletes we support. The revenue generated by the department is necessary to provide the academic, medical, nutritional and athletic support that is relied upon by our student-athletes.
This is why we are so committed to trying to find a solution to safely play college sports. We understand there are serious health considerations that are implicated by moving forward with sports. However, we are confident that our department can provide a safer environment for the athletes in Ames, where they are motivated by their teammates and competition to modify their social behavior. We also feel confident that our mitigation efforts can reduce the risk for fans at Jack Trice Stadium. We will be transparent about these efforts so fans can evaluate and choose for themselves whether they are comfortable attending games or not.

quote:

Some people have suggested that we should simply play fall sports in the spring when the challenges of COVID-19 could be reduced. Unfortunately, there are no guarantee things will improve in the spring and there are numerous hurdles to overcome. The most-significant challenge is committing another six months of operational costs (roughly $40M in our case) for the fall semester with no revenues to cover those expenses.

Nothing will change as long as we have half the country standing up for their RIGHT to not wear a mask.

It's just nice to finally have someone say that it's about money.

That's actually shocking.

If only these athletic departments could just print money like our federal government can.

Californians have had mask mandates for over a month and are by far the state that believes in mask the most

And now, they are seeing there biggest spike, so

High time for the systems to scale back on athletic department expenditures.... it is out of hand and not the reason for their existence.

Wouldn't athletes be safer in a controlled environment vs staying home and socializing?

Nah, we should want things spreading faster, not slower.

Yep.

Can masks bring some benefits? Sure. Are they what is standing between us having football and not having football? Absolutely not and to suggest such is absolutely delusional.

Nor will it change when the other half is standing up for their RIGHT to force the other half to updend their life. And I'm not talking about wearing a mask. I'm talking about all the food service, entertainment, hospitality, and health & beauty employees who are trying to make ends meet but are told they must stay at home. At first it was all about flattening the curve. Now its literally about waiting for a vaccine. No. Sorry it doesn't work that way.

Seems at least half of the viral youtube videos people post here of nutcases protesting masks and going postal in stores that require them are from Southern California.

Because they are the states with the strictest mandate and compliance....So, that’s also the places where “rebels” of any cause are the loudest/stand out the most

He is over thinking it, we fought and died for freedom. Let people make their own choice.

If people are worried, by all means they should stay home.

Wearing mask makes them feel they can do anything and do things that most would be social distancing. Got to do both wear mask and social distancing. Not just wear a mask.

When posters like myself have insinuated that it's always about the Money, I get cursed 7 ways to Sunday for interjecting politics into "muh beloved Sports", I just want muh EssEeeCee without all the Political BS......

I'll say for the 200th time if what she's saying is true and I'm sure it is, to have that much reliance on FB & MBB means that those 2 Sports deserve more than just the full scholly

They deserve:

Unpunished transfers after 2 years in the Program, in addition to unpunished transfers after a HC or Coordinator changes jobs, in addition to unpunished transfers after they graduate (they currently have this)

NIL Endorsement Deals

Ehanced Stipends, to replace the CoA stipends, meaning more money

That much reliance on 100 guys that play FB & MBB means should be fairly compensated IMO

The driving force is always going to be money, but that doesn't necessarily mean greed. I'm not saying that's what you meant, just giving my own opinion. So many people depend on that money including the athletes that get health care, room, board and tutoring that they would never have gotten before. Then, the impact it has on the community and attracting other students is huge.

It's past time that these kids get their fair compensation based on the revenue that they bring in. It's ridiculous that they can't make money off of their own name.

We could start by having AD's and coaches taking massive pay cuts. They will still be rich.
