It's really simple:

If a city has a democrat mayor, votes democrat regularly, has a large minority population, then crime is going to be much higher than cities/towns that have a republican mayor, votes republican regularly, and has a low minority population.

End of discussion. The truth hurts.

and two blocks over from you is probably a crack house. The nations was built right in the middle of a ghetto. The schools the nations are zoned for still are. Just because some builders started to develop a neighborhood doesn't mean the surrounding areas aren't awful.

I'm not a pussy. I grew up in Memphis. I know what living around crime is. I'm just cognizant of my surroundings. I know plenty of people who live in the Nations. i also know plenty of people in the nations that have been robbed. Sorry, I just prefer to reside where that is the least of my concerns. I don't feel the need to overpay for a house in a trendy gentrified neighborhood so I can be close to downtown Nashville.

This right here. And I would be nervous if it was my 100lb wife walking the dog alone. It's just a matter of time till a car full of thugs drive by at the right time and she is robbed of even worse. No One ever thinks It'll happen to them till it does. And in that area it is happening more and more. That's just the cold hard facts.

Nashville is pretty amazing.

I like Nashville, it's a cool place. But I bet most people don't know that Nashville has a violent crime rate that's virtually identical to Atlanta, Philadelphia, and Miami. And a property crime rate almost identical to that of New Orleans.

Baton Rouge also has the distinction of probably being one of the biggest SEC cities. Off the top of my head, I bet that only Nashville is bigger and maybe Knoxville is comparable in size? Even without that in Baton Rouge's defense, the place is still kind of a shithole though. Even some of the neighborhoods around LSU are pretty sketchy.

Metro Baton Rouge is a little bit smaller than metro Knoxville and metro Columbia, SC. It's a decent bit bigger than metro Lexington, KY, but those four are probably comparable in terms of size, economic influence, and so forth.

I haven't been there extensively, but from what I recall, Columbia, SC, isn't exactly some leading urban light, though I am sure, like any city of its size, it has its good and bad areas. That would seem to be Baton Rouge's closest comparison - large state university, state capital, somewhat culturally outshone by its coastal and better known sister city in the state.

Both Lexington and Knoxville are pretty nice, I think, probably some of the nicer towns in the SEC.

But none of them compare to that shite hole that is South Bend, Indiana. It has a murder rate not that far off from Baton Rouge's without any of the redeeming factors that Baton Rouge has.

Fair enough. I haven't actually researched the statistics. Perhaps what I should have said was that I found a larger percentage seemed safer than most cities, so (again, not having researched ) perhaps the dangerous areas are more concentrated geographically than most cities I've lived in or visited regularly.

He's right. It's 11.26 for Nashville and 11.40 for Atlanta.

It's funny how much a city's reputation seems to affect peoples' perspective. Cities like Nashville and Austin aren't as amazing as they are made out to be and cities like Memphis and Baton Rouge aren't as terrible or dangerous as some people would make you think.

Right? I didn't want to call him out on that but I would NEVER make a habit of letting my wife stroll around at night like that in that part of town because like you said no one thinks anything will happen until it does.

How is that possible given their resources? Great coastal access, oil money...

How is it possible to frick things up as badly as they have?

Baton Rouge is exceptionally violent, and it's almost exclusively caused by a certain demographic that holds a majority of the population in the city proper.

I'll let you guess the rest.

He was talking about a different kind of culture.

See current Baton Rouge leadership. They're so horrible their tax base in the southern part of the city has initiated another breakaway attempt, and they'll probably win this time.
