Anybody else love working long hours, have least paid vacation, and have least national holidays compared to rest of developed world? I personally love it!

quote:

(CNN) -- Let's be blunt: If you like to take lots of vacation, the United States is not the place to work.

'Americans work like robots'
It's a totally different story in other parts of the world.

Nancy Schimkat, an American who lives in Weinheim, Germany, said her German husband, an engineer, gets six weeks of paid vacation a year, plus national holidays -- the norm. His company makes sure he takes all of it.

It's typical for Germans to take off three consecutive weeks in August when "most of the country kind of closes down," Schimkat said. That's the time for big trips, perhaps to other parts of Europe, or to Australia or North America.

Germans might also book a ski holiday in the winter and take a week off during Easter.
Schimkat's family back in the United States teases her that she's spoiled. But when she tells Germans that workers in the U.S. usually get two weeks of vacation a year, they cringe.

"They kind of have this idea that Americans work like robots and if that's the way they want to be, that's up to them. But they don't want to be like that," Schimkat said.

"[Germans] work very hard, but then they take their holiday and really relax. ... It's more than just making money for Germans, it's about having time for your family and it's about having time to wind down."

Sounds about right, I need a damn vacation. However, this country is very success driven and if you don't work hard then you don't succeed.

I'm sure sweatshop workers work very hard as well. and it's not like Germans are slacking off with their 4 weeks guaranteed vacation from employers (Federal law). They take some time off and when they come back, I'm sure they work very hard. Germany has the 3rd largest economy in the world.

What is the point of all this work we do? I will never understand this 5 on 2 off.. We only have 1 life to live so why spend it being unhappy.. frick the early bird gets the worm shite.. It is pointless.. We are supposed to be a world leader but yet can't get it in our heads that we are not evolving.. This nations workers hate our schedule, vacation time and our paid holidays which are a joke.
I'm lucky enough to work for a company that takes 2 weeks off for Christmas Friday and Monday at Easter and half a week on thanksgiving.. But I still want more.. Why not have a rotating schedule or a day where if ur work is done I can just leave.. I hate sitting around half a day bored out of my mind.. I would rather be doing something for me than waiting for "the man" to say my time of serving him for the day is done

When 50% of the nation is subsidized by the other half, the productive half won't much time for shite like vacations and time off.

FWIW, while I prefer a capitalist society, we really need to decide if we truly want to be capitalist or socialist and stop straddling the line because it's really fricking shite up.

we should take the support net away from the 50 percent that doesn't contribute. Then the contributors still profit but would also get more off time.

Most Americans only get two weeks off right now. But many don't even take the full two weeks out of fear of losing their jobs. One in four gets no paid vacation at all, not even holidays.

Most U.S workers don't even use their 2 weeks vacation. Only 57% of U.S. workers use up all of the days they're entitled to, compared with 89% of workers in France (5 weeks), a recent Reuters/Ipsos poll found.

quote:

No legal obligation to offer vacation

So what's going on here?

A big reason for the difference is that paid time off is mandated by law in many parts of the world.
Germany is among more than two dozen industrialized countries -- from Australia to Slovenia to Japan -- that require employers to offer four weeks or more of paid vacation to their workers, according to a 2009 study by the human resources consulting company Mercer.

Finland, Brazil and France are the champs, guaranteeing six weeks of time off.
But employers in the United States are not obligated under federal law to offer any paid vacation, so about a quarter of all American workers don't have access to it, government figures show.

That makes the U.S. the only advanced nation in the world that doesn't guarantee its workers annual leave

Who needs all of those vacation days when you don't have a job, but still get paid? Everyday is a vacation day!

well hell, good point.

America should go ahead and stop innovating crap like the iPhone, internet, flight, electricity, getting to the moon, and all that because we need more vacations.

when was the last time something innovative or world changing came out of any of the countries left of Germany? heck left of the UK for that matter.

How's France's economy and government doing under this? Oh, they just effing dissolved themselves because they were so insolvent.

To be fair, they've had that system in place for a while now but their economy has go to shite at warp speed lately because their new Socialist President is taxing companies and people earning 1 mill+/year at 75%, so most all of the job creators are fleeing the country. Needless to say, his approval rating has hit absolute rock-bottom.

well yea it wont happen because both parties have vote farms that would revolt if they took away their gov benefits. Also id like to point out that all those other countries have very little diversity so the culture in the country is almost 100 percent the same. If we saw more actually capitalism in this country you would see more companies start to adopt a more working friendly environment including vacations and what not. The more innovative companies already have some great packages/ different work environments that lead to better productivity with less grueling work time. The majority in the US will take lots of time to switch and not all jobs are really conducive to a more modern work schedule. However, once companies see employee moral and production go up with different methods the others start to adapt at some point. They would adapt faster in a true capitalist system but we don't have that.

or here's a thought, negotiate for more vacation days.

absolutely, i don't blame their vacation days for this, i blame the attitude and politics that come with the demands for that many vacation days.

Great idea, why didn't I think of that. Everybody should go to their boss and do the same. We'll all get more vacation time.

Some of their views on vacation and work time might have to do with social political views, but it isn't a direct link. Im down the middle and a business major and I'm for a more efficient work schedule with more vacation. I realize not every industry can do this so I don't think national laws are the answer for how to get better vacation/ work time. I look at it from a companies perspective, if I could get my employees to be more efficient and get the job done faster by giving them ample vacation time and a floating work schedule id do it in a heartbeat. It creates an environment where workers want to be and can possibly cut down on my expenses. It also buys me a hell of a lot of goodwill with the public because i would be a trendy company that cares. This type of new work schedule or a more relaxed environment would probably work best in investment type firms, tech companies and some other areas. It clearly wouldn't do a damn thing for oil, gas, construction, or most of the food service industry. The view of we need more vacation isn't strictly a socialist view because if you are a creative thinker you can see where it can help and be profitable especially with todays technology. Now I will agree the demanding of national laws for it is a socialist leaning and probably does contribute to some of the problems.

i genuinely do, but understand the sentiment. if i won the lottery tomorrow, i'd buy a portion from my boss and keep doing it.

it's possible. i've done it twice.

why on earth is it ludicrous to suggest this? i did it at my current job. now i understand that going to your current employer and asking may not get you far, but instead of asking for a raise, ask for more time off. i think Americans lack the ability to negotiate sometimes.

The rest of the developed world isn't closing in on $15 trillion in debt.
