Pulmonary embolism in January of last year. I couldn't catch my breath. Doc asked me for my pain scale (1 - I'm ok to 10 - I'm on fire) I told him I have never been on fire, so I'm about an 8. Less than a minute later I broke out in a sweat and passed out. They caught me just before I hit the floor. He told me whatever that was, call it a 10 next time. I got an injection of Dilauted (sp) and all was well.
I lost 15% of my lung function that day. I spent a few days in ICU and a few more in a regular room. I got a nice filter in my chest too.

When Viagra first came out I thought I would try it. After a visit to my Medical Professional they gave me 6 'sample packs' before they would write a prescription told me to try it and if I did not suffer any side effects to come back for a follow up visit and would look at getting me a prescription. Never being one to do anything in Moderation I decided instead of taking one pill which was the recommended Dosage I took 5.
Well all was fine until hours later I ended up with a nose bleed that was like a faucet that would not stop was also bleeding out my ears and had the worst headache I have ever had. This lasted on and off for about 20 hours. Went to the ER and my blood pressure was 200/160. Told them what I did and they scolded me and said I was in danger of all this stuff happening to me including organs shutting down etc. I managed to live.

I thought it would be 5 times as good. Just like doing 1 line of coke is not as good as 6 or 2 beers isn't as good as 12. My bathroom looked like a murder scene with all the blood and bloody towels/rags. It just wouldn't stop.

Kidney Stone, pissed blood, threw up from the pain. Had Morphine and it didn't even phase it. Dilaudid by IV made life good again.
That pain is closely followed by stepping on your kids Lego in your heel on the hall floor at 2:00 am in the dark. Yelling "Motherfricker" gets you knocked in the head by your wife to just add to the experience too!

It's a toss-up between 5 broken ribs or a couple of blown discs. The discs/nerve issues lasted much longer, so I'll give It The nod.

Happened in college. Had to work, tending bar and waiting tables, in order to pay tuition.
Tried to work through bronchitis, while working and partying, and developed pneumonia with pericarditis; intense, constant sharp pain in chest. Had to be hospitalized and given morphine.
Thought I was dying.

I guess I got lucky as mine really wasn't too bad. It was extremely uncomfortable for a few hours, but that was really it.

Seriously, folks today have no idea how far we have come with painkillers in the last 50 years. Now they zap you with some knockout drug and you wake up in the recovery room and still doped with some happy juice so if you have pain, you can't feel it.
You are so right. When I was a kid, my dentist didn't give anything when filling a cavity. He'd hit the nerve with the drill and you would come unglued.

Glad you posted this one.
When I was young and stupid (as opposed to old and stupid like I am now), I managed to shoot a BB into the distal phalanges (the last part) of the index finger my left hand. The thing is, I didn't know it was in there. So a few days later when my finger looked like a bratwurst, I went to see the doc. A quick x-ray showed the BB in there along with the broken bone. But that wasn't the part that hurt. So the doc numbs my hand up, slices open the pad of my finger and takes a pair of hemostats and starts fishing around for the BB. A few seconds later he says, "Ahh, there it is" and clamps the hemostats shut tight.
Right on my finger bone! It was absolutely the most painful thing I've ever experienced. It was a white hot pain that closed in my vision for a few seconds. Writhing in pain, I immediately shot, "That's not it! That's not it!"
Casually, he says "Oops. Sorry about that."

A few seconds later he found the BB and that was that. I still have a bunch of scar tissue in there that I can feel to this day.
And Yes, I've had a kidney stone or three, they were nothing compared to this.

frickin A on this.
When I was a kid, we went to an old dentist that was a friend of my grandfather. fricker was like out of the stone age. in HS I broke a front tooth and he put a probe right into the pulp of the tooth. I nearly levitated right out of the chair. I came up swinging. Didnt hit the bastard, but we left and never went back.
Went to a real dentist and got it fixed crowned no prob.

Got kilt while serving in the military. Blown out lung. Craziest shite ever. Felt like someone ran me through the chest with a frickin sword. Stopped my heart. I hurt for a long time over that stupid shite.
