Elvis caused a world wide shift in which age group dominates music tastes. Before him it was middle-aged people. After him young people have heavily influenced the types of music that are produced.

On sheer influence alone I wouldnt argue against Elvis. My only gripe is he didnt write music. He was basically a pretty boy who could sing.

His influence was more on pop culture in general and not on the guts of the actual music itself.

James Brown basically created the paradigm shifts that led to post modern music. Add to that he was a helluva a showman in his own right.

Robert Johnson is undeniable but youre talking more about the roots. James Brown is the roots and the now. You could just loop the drum break from "Funky Drummer" and that is a modern production.

And I haven't even mentioned the 4/4 beat.

He was from my hometown in SC. He used to work for my grandfather during the summers when he was a boy.

Small world we live in. My Grandmother knew him in his younger days in Augusta. He would sing and dance for a quarter at the local drive in.

She didnt tell me that story until her later years. I let her know that for years she denied me a sick brag. (Im a long time record collector).

I am greatly saddened that no one has championed Tiny Tim singing "Tiptoe through the tulips".

Its like I don't even know you people anymore.

While I appreciate many of the posts in this thread, it has a very American bend.

It is like Christians forgetting that most of the actual world population is not Christian.

I do like folks bringing up those who actually created their music as opposed to those who were just trained to perform it. Excellent point!

Then I guess the only correct answer is whatever early homonid first banged out 4/4 time with sticks on a skull.

Personally I would go with the guy who did 3/4 time

Props to the early ugly guy who could not hunt for figuring out a way to breed with women and getting his genes in the mix.

Who influenced James Brown? They probably influenced 10x the musicians.

Bach or Mozart

But since that isn't what the OP probably meant, I'll say Bob Dylan for solo artist and the Beatles for a group. Chuck Berry is under appreciated when it comes to this topic IMO.
