quote:Belief is not something you choose. You either believe something or you don't, but you can't turn it on and off. Can you choose to believe something as true that you know is false? Of course not. Someone can choose to go to church or say a prayer or go through the motions, but that isn't what makes someone a Christian. Faith and belief is what makes someone a Christian, and I can no more choose to not believe what I believe than you can choose to believe it by just trying really hard.
You chose to be. Just as I chose to not be, even though from the time I was born until I was a teenager I attended church every Sunday and every Wednesday and was even baptized.
People don't choose to be a certain race, gender, or sexuality. Those are things that cannot be changed.
Sexuality can and does change all the time. Maybe not as drastically as going from a man to a woman or vice versa, but I think it does. It can be changing your sexual tastes and preferences from blondes to brunettes; from only young males/females to more mature fancies; or even the kinds of sexual fantasies that a person has can change over time. In other words, what turns a person on can and does change over time. But you're right in that a black person can't change his skin color (or can he?) or a man can't become a woman (even though I'm supposed to believe they can?) I get your point, but sexuality isn't exactly in the same boat as race and gender, though a lot of people want to believe it. But that isn't to say people willfully choose to change their sexual preferences; it just kind of happens through exposure, maturity (or immaturity), or other things.
quote:I do believe that some sins are greater or worse than others, but you're right in that, according to the Bible, homosexuality is just one sin among many. This particular conversation isn't about adultery or theft, though. If you'd like me to condemn those things, I'll gladly do it. I don't pick and choose which sins I want to accept or reject. In fact, I know that many Christians make a big deal about homosexuality and then go home to their live-in lover for some passionate, unmarried sex. It's very hypocritical. I'm a sinner, but I recognize that I do sin (I don't try to justify my actions as being "OK" before God), and when I sin, I repent and ask for God's forgiveness.
According to your Bible, all sins are equal. If, indeed, homosexuality is a sin, it is no worse sin than drunkenness, premarital sex, and coveting your neighbors ox or arse.
I've never seen Christians try to keep those who live with partners that they aren't married to or are seen at the local bar every night out of their establishments though.
I agree that a lot of Christians don't make an effort to toss out people "living in sin" in other ways from their establishments, but maybe they would if people walked around with scarlet A's or turquoise F's. Personally, I would not discriminate against homosexuals or any other sinners. However, I might take the opportunity to preach the Gospel to them while I made their cake or took their money for some service I was providing. Or maybe not, since it is within the context of business. Perhaps I'd try to befriend a customer and then develop a more personal relationship that is more natural to discuss such things.
But your point is accurate: many Christians make a big deal about homosexuality while ignoring the other sins. I'm not that way, though. I think part of the problem is that homosexuality has become the "it" thing these days, and it is being pushed for acceptance all over the place, which creates a disproportionate amount of response compared to other sins that are already accepted as commonplace.

quote:So... a person can hate homosexuals (I don't) but as long as they don't go out of their way to prevent them from doing certain things, they aren't considered bigots to you?
I would only call you a bigot if you actively discriminate or support the government to actively discriminate.
It's not like Catfan is wanting to pass legislation to make fundamentalist Christians to ride the back of the bus. If she was, then sure she's a bigot against Christians.
There are some very interesting standards around here.

Every gay person that I know, and I live in Midtown ATL so I know a lot, would be perfectly happy with state recognized civil unions. Most of the far right neocons would never go for that either though.

I believe that I might have come up with a compromise to this whole problem that will make everyone happy! People in the gay community want the same rights as married couples, but dissenters don't want the word "marriage" corrupted. So how about we let gay people get married, but call it something else? You homosexuals will have all the exact same rights as married couples, but instead of referring to you as "married," you can be "butt buddies". Instead of being "man and wife," you'll be "butt buddies". You won't be "betrothed," you'll be "butt buddies". Get it? Instead of a "bride and groom," you'd be "butt buddies".
And when they start saying "We want to be equal"
We tell them:
You are equal. It's just that instead of getting "engaged," you would be "butt buddies".

What about lesbians? Butt pirates/buddies doesn't fit as well.

Well yeah, but that's what many asked for in the early 90's and instead conservatives wrote and pushed for passage of DOMA. The civil union ship sailed a long time ago, even though most gays would be happy with the equal rights a civil union could bring.
