EKG, I gave you an up vote to offset the person who down voted you. I thought it was a good post.
On another note, the education system is deeper in the toilet than I thought when OK and LA are considered countries, not states.

Here are two numbers:
12,944
12,900
would you say that's a significant difference? Of course not.
The first one is the number of people incarcerated in Portugal the year before they decriminalized virtually all drugs (2000). The second is the number of people incarcerated 17 years after decriminalization (2018).
Decriminalization may change the way addiction is addressed but it doesn't do one thing to change prison population numbers.
We're missing some data..
1) Population change data
2) Data on types of convictions of those incarcerated (before and after)
3) Rate of incarceration growth (year over year) for the ten years leading up to 2000
4) How many of the 12,900 currently incarcerated were locked up prior to 2000?

IMO, incarceration/criminal justice needs to focus more on rehab than retaliation and retribution.
See most of the systems they have in western Europe. Also, non-violent drug offenders don't need to be in prisons.

Forgot about this board.
But we seem to be getting a lot of murders rt now from people who had been to jail multiple times already and some released this year.
So what's the answer then? And we aren't talking not paying a speeding ticket. Weapons charges, yes and drug charges, grand theft auto, battery.

Good. We don't incarcerate enough because there are still terrible crimes committed by people with lengthy RAP sheets.
