I'm actually one of the people who think the Somg of Ice and Fire series is the best series ever written, even above Hobbit and LotR.
The thing is that people in real life don't learn from mistakes and history does in fact repeat itself. Therefore, why shouldn't we accept this to happen in a fantasy series?

I see your point, but I kind of see those as secondary actions. They influenced major decisions that had to be made and he like, but it has been along time since I read all the books through. I was just left with a bad taste after the last book that probably jaded me a little towards the whole series. I'm sure I will like them a better once I read them through again (that I'll be read # 3 for the first 3 and # 2 for the rest). Honestly at this point I want the whitewalkers to come in a take over it all. Maybe have some really awesome social structure, etc. whih makes them seem more animated and less barbarian thoughtless monster.
I will probably try to do a re read before the next one comes out. I've gotten caught up in up in another series that was recommended to me, and I also need to go through the last 3 books of Wheel of Time again. I suffered from the post final book letdown that always happens, but I actually did enjoy the last one of that series more than I thought I would.

Some people learn from their mistakes, will hold off further judgement until I have read through the books again, but some I do not think the series so far has cashed in on the promise of the first two books.
Of course the last two books could make me change my tune.

I think Tolkien was a better writer and I don't know if any writer will ever surpass him in terms of imagination and creativity.
That said, I agree that SOIAF is better than LOTR. It honestly pains me to say it because Return of the King is, IMO, one of the greatest books ever written, but....Martin's character development > Tolkien's and it isn't even close. To me, that makes all the difference. Martin's characters evolve and he has molded them in a way that makes you feel like you actually know them. To the point that, despite quickly figuring out that he gives zero fricks about killing them off, you can't help but be pissed off when he does it, or makes you think he did it.

I just don't see the character development in Martin's books.
Robb never really changed, we know what happened to him. I don't see much change from Cersei, Tywin, the little douche king, dragon blondie has a lot more force of will and personality now than she did at the beginning but I hate the bitch and want her dragons to eat the frick out of her (not in a sexual way),

Have you read all of the books? Because I can't see how you can say Daenerys or Ceresi hasn't changed from where they were at the beginning of the series if you've read all the published books. Dany is a completely different person then she was as essentially her brother's slave with Illyrio. Ceresi, especially in the later books, goes through a pretty significant change as well.
Change isn't always change for the better. Just like people don't always learn from their mistakes (as multiple people have said).

Robb, Tywin, and Joffrey are all non POV characters. They are his version of pawns.

I have read all the books, I read the most recent one half assed as I was getting bored with some of his techniques after book 4. And all this said the series is one of the better ones I have read, I get more critical of a series the more I read it, but I usually only get through two books of most series before I can't go on anymore.
I did say that dragon lady (I can't ever spell her name right) has changed from the beginning to this point. I do think she represents a certain type of character that Martin has tried to avoid thus far so I am interested to see what happens to her in the remaining portion of the series. And i don't mean that all of the characters act the exact same way, but the "power characters" so to speak seem to have the same reaction to situations Which is perfectly plausible, I just personally do not enjoy it. There are also so many characters we do not get to see beyond the actions and into the mind of some of the characters which is what I really enjoy. And this aspect also has a major contribution to my view of "lack of character development".

I had spoiled some of it and I knew the red wedding was where Robb was gonna die. But I didn't see any details. I always pictured the wedding would be Joffy and Marg and Robb would be beheaded oh well this was way more fricked up

Well I never knew the movie board could have such meltdowns. This is entertaining...it's just a fricking TV show!
