Late 1960s, Economy Class Seating on a Pan-Am 747
Fun Fact - The first commercial 747 flight was by Pan-Am on January 22, 1970.
That picture sort of pisses me off. People are bigger. Seats are smaller. 8 seats per row here. The 747 is 9 seats across now with no leg room.

trans Atlantic coach flight cost around $500-600 in 1970, accounting for inflation that's like $3500 today. You paid and received pretty much what you get in normal first class now

The Tolkien book is actually "the hobbit". Thanks for post. Very interesting.
No, no it's not. It's The Fellowship of the Ring.

Been to Pointe do Hoc. It's amazing to walk amongst those craters. You get a real sense of the hell on Earth that took place that day.

That rate was for "unlimited" tickets that you could swap at any time for any reason. It was usually the businessman ticket of choice for people that might need to make a lot of changes on a trip. That price included free First Class upgrade if seats were available. My dad always had those tickets. If he just needed to get to London, he could get a $99 one-way ticket for any off-hour flight. He generally flew BOAC for those flights. The typical non-refundable ticket was more in the $250 range with a 2-week notice, so basically, he saved $25 for taking the midnight run. There was no advanced purchase required, but they did sell out that rate fairly regularly, so it was risky depending on one of these. He was flying out of SFO, btw.
Just for yucks, SFO to LAX was $19 roundtrip in the early 70's. Basically every airline had flights leaving every 30 to 45 minutes all day. Even in the late 90's, I could fly SWA to Burbank, LAX, or Anaheim for $29 each way from SFO, San Jose, or Oakland. Before the Gulf War, you went to the airport, bought a round-trip ticket, went to the gate, got a number, and got on the plane. Every now and then, you had to wait 30 minutes for the next flight. It was ridiculously easy to go to LA for the day.

So you are telling me he wrote it before publishing it? Amazing. Go read the first page of the hobbit and the first page of the Fellowship and get back to me.

I would suggest you read them because I have and he published the hobbit in 1937 (check the op) and if you had read the hobbit you would recognize it. Fellowship of the ring is eerily similar to the hobbit but nevertheless not the hobbit.

The first chapter in The Fellowship of the Ring is titled "A Long Expected Party," just as the title on that manuscript page. It's definitely from The Lord of the Rings, not The Hobbit.
