Here is my apolotical take on Carter.
By all accounts he was a fantastic person, with a real prickish side to him. He did a lot of good things as a person while, at times, being a complete d-bag to everyone around him. Carter could be very kind and he could be a complete jack arse. Sometimes with a few seconds turn around.
His fellow Presidents (we will leave out the obvious exception) all respected him but couldn't stand him. Particularly because Carter had a nasty tendency to do some quality grandstanding while you were trying to quietly resolve an international crisis. One reason Bush the Elder and Bill Clinton got along so famously after leaving office is that they both had Carter sticks his nose in our business stories to tell.
Carter effectively gutted his reelection campaign like a trout by going out of his way to pick a fight with Ted Kennedy. The country as a whole has drifted to the right politically since Carter but when he was elected he was seen as a center right Democrat and he took office vowing to destroy the leftist agenda of the Kennedy crowd. "I'll whip his arse!" is a great battle cry... but maybe not when you are facing a strong Republican candidate and need to unite your party before the national election.
He was a notorious micromanager while President which works out great when you are just focusing on one thing, like a long term peace treaty between Israel and Egypt. But it is a disaster of a strategy when you are trying to run the country and pass legislation.
Carter's virtues were his vices, what made him a good person also could make him a stubborn prick who ruined everything.

Went thru the same nuclear prototype as him. Remembered as a decent person most of the time, but a terrible officer.

- Was not a good President
Paralyzed by micro management and the above mentioned stubborness
He once took two hours to see the White House staff tennis tournament
Greatest Ex President ever

Iran played Carter like a fiddle during the hostage crisis. That was what sunk him...even more than a struggling economy, the 1980 Summer Olympics Boycott and giving the Panama Canal away.Ironically, had Operation Eagle Claw (the aborted Iran hostage rescue attempt) succeeded, Carter likely would have rode that to victory over Reagan.
