"On March 21, President Trump issued a mandate for NASA: get people to Mars by 2033. One week later, NASA responded with its most detailed plan to date for reaching the Red Planet, and it details five phases along the road to Mars".
"NASA also has competition in the race to get to Mars. Both Boeing and SpaceX hope to get there first, with SpaceX setting the lofty goal of arriving in 2022".
So we knew it was inevitable but how do you feel about it? I personally can think of much better ways to spend the amount of money that is going to be spent on Mars. It is exciting though.

M-A-R-S... Mars, bitches!

It's exciting, but I think it's a waste of money for NASA. I'm glad their budget is bigger, but I don't think Mars should be our target.
I don't think putting people on Mars will really accomplish anything.

That march for science really got his attention

Considering all the poop one excretes on the way to Mars will have to be smeared all over them and all over the spacecraft to protect the astronauts from radiation, I don't think it's worth it right now. Until a propulsion system can be perfected that wouldn't require a 3 year trip to and from Mars. The astronaut would literally be riddled with cancer by the time they made it to Mars

It's myopic thinking on the part of those supporting a manned mission to Mars. However, it's probably a necessary effort in convincing everyone that manned exploration of space is not practical or even possible over the long term.
I thought that lesson had been learned by the moon missions of the 1960s-70s. After all, no one has seriously proposed returning to the moon. I think the leaders at NASA know that it's foolish but that it would be self-defeating to say so. Space exploration is in dire need of a major boost in public attention and this planned mission to Mars could certainly revive the average American's support for our space agency. I support the effort, in this case.
As I always say, it will be artificial intelligence that spreads humanity's message into the Universe, not humans themselves. We're making great strides in A.I. research and it will parallel the development and execution of this mission. Actually, it'll probably be responsible for insuring the success of an epic journey to Mars.

The psychological effects of a flight that long crammed into a small spacecraft will prove to be the biggest fly in the ointment here imo. Lots of things can go wrong for anyone foolish enough to do this but they will be completely bonkers if they actually do pull it off and arrive in one piece.

Sounds right.

It's a six month journey to Mars at its closest (which is when NASA will launch). You figure a one month stay on the surface and the round trip should be about 13 or 14 months.

I'd like to go there and be like John Carter. Have adventures and have enhanced physical abilities!!

I'm not one for gov't spending of any kind, but if I have to choose between NASA and bombing more people in the ME, I'll choose NASA.

I completely agree. I just wish NASA was using the money for something besides a trip to Mars.

Generally speaking, I agree. Government should perform only those functions that the private sector can't or won't which are vital to the safety of the population. Scientific endeavors such as space exploration fall into this category when other countries stand to gain an advantage over the U.S. militarily because of discoveries in technology. I think education of the population fits, too, because it's clear via comparative studies that the earth's best educated countries are far healthier and more concerned with the environment than those that don't provide universal education.

They don't really have a choice. When President Kennedy pledged America's commitment to landing a man on the moon by 1969 our space program went into overdrive with full support from the public. The technological advancements from the space race with the Soviet Union were astounding.
Now President Trump is calling for a manned mission to Mars by 2033. NASA must take this opportunity to once again make a huge leap technologically. The potential benefits to the common man are even greater than they were from the moon mission.

Why? It seems logical to me.

Mars seemingly has more potential than say the moon. I think the moons of Saturn and Jupiter have the greatest potential for life. Just not sure they are the most habitable.

No solar system body other than earth is habitable for us with our current technology. The amount of solar radiation on Mars and the low gravity make a long stay on the red planet impossible for humans. Even brief visits may cause irreparable damage to any biological creatures on the surface of Mars.

I disagree. It is momentous tasks like this, when humanity is at its greatest.
We waste far too much money on helping the poor/lazy, fighting wars and making rich people even richer.
The ability of man to leave this planet one day will benefit all mankind.
