So yes Athens is little Austin. Weird. Gritty. Hipster. College.

Is this actually a phrase? Also Austin is losing it's identity. It's becoming more and more like Dallas every day.

They've absolutely destroyed the oconee connector/Mars hill near the QT. Look out for a ton of development on that side of 316 in years to come.

That's not it at all.

Academics is simply not a profitable endeavour. And if profit is not the motive, don't be surprised when you don't find consrvatives.

The problem often comes in when people want to judge each other by whether or not they're motivated by profit.

Dont forget Athens has a well established gay community. Tuscaloosa not as much. Gays always vote liberal for obvious reasons.

athens is a real city and unique. Oconee just another suburb...fine if you're into that kind of thing. Some comments on this thread are highly thoughtful...most are not.

Back to the voting thing...

Athens is part of a gerrymandered district that conservatives don't even run ads in, you hardly even see republican signs on the side of the road. Conservatives ignore Athens completely, it's a waste of money.

Instead, they concentrate that money on other areas of the same district that are red, in an effort to bump turnout in those areas to win that way.

If conservative candidates put more money into getting conservative voters in Athens out to the polls, we might not be the second-most liberal (politically speaking) town in the South. Or whatever the statistic was in OP.

I worked at Prince Avenue Christian school the other night and was truly shocked how much money was in that place. Is most of that crowd from Oconee or Watkinsville?

Democrats have irreparably damaged the word 'liberal.'

Which is interesting considering that the city leadership (mayor et al) trend more conservative than progressive, much to the chagrin of the Athens citizenry. In other words, and probably to your point, Athens can be made conservative in the polls when the leadership wants it to be. But it's just not worth the struggle so it doesn't happen. Plus, as much as I found guys like Tim Denson entertaining, the progressive side of Athens doesn't exactly put up the most reliable or experienced challengers to the conservative establishment in the leadership positions
