63.2% of Clarke County voted for Obama in 2012, making it the second bluest county in the SEC after Richland (USC). Anyone can explain this? Race can't be the reason because Tuscaloosa County has similar demographics but went 58.2% for Romney. Never imagined Athens to be almost as liberal as Ann Arbor or Boulder.

Always has been. It's hippie central
By the way, the racial makeup of the two aren't exactly the same. Clarke only has around 120,000 whereas Tuscaloosa has close to 200,000.
Also the black population in Tuscaloosa is a higher percentage than Clarke.
So yes Athens is little Austin. Weird. Gritty. Hipster. College.

College students vote democrat.
Then they enter the real world and grow a brain.

They prefer the term "progressive," but yeah it's always been like this. It's the arts and music capital of the state and the county and city lines are virtually the same (making Clarke the smallest county in the state).

Most of the college students either mail in their votes through their parents address or just don't vote.

.
You can only vote in he county you are registered in and I would guess that nearly all college students do not register to vote in the county they attend school.

It is somewhat surprising that the states of the South have voted for Republican presidents so often considering the high percentage of blacks and their somewhat disturbing need to always vote democrat.

Voter ID laws have supressed the black vote. Just ask Stonehog

I'd imagine UGA students to be more conservative because they are mostly white and from the northern Atlanta suburbs, which are very red.

Liberal hippies are the worst kind of hippies.

Liberal progressives typically dominant academia. It's a key component of the liberal agenda.

It's funny to me that pot and gay marriage are "progressive" ideas.

Austin is different in terms of demographics. Austin has hardly any blacks, particularly central Austin which has almost none. The east side has some, but gentrification and the tax man are quickly chasing them out. Austin is white liberals and hipsters up against white libertarian gun freaks and conspiracy nuts; it's not grimy or really that weird. Hell, Houston is weirder and WAY grimier. SF and NYC are REAL weird. Austin is white, new, and clean. Don't base your impression on 6th Street. That's pretty much the only non-pure-white non fancy-arse brand-new trendy white thing in town.
