I can't imagine what those heroes went thru. And one of the few appropriate references of the word hero.

The crowning moment of glory for Theodore Roosevelt Jr. was D-Day. Crippled with injuries from WWI and with less then a month to live before a fatal heart attack he directed the troops on Utah beach and won a Medal of Honor.

All while dragging a massive pair of balls behind him in the sand of Normandy.

"Many men came here as soldiers, many men will pass this way. Many men will count the hours as they live The Longest Day.
Many men are tired and weary, many men are here to stay. Many men won't see the sunset when it ends The Longest Day."

I was able to visit Normandy and the Pointe du Hoc battlefield about 9 years ago so I have many of the same pictures. Very surreal scene. Seeing the huge craters that pictures don't do justice and the thick walled bunkers left crumbled by bombing runs impacted me the most. War is crazy.

On my next trip to Europe I intend to spend a good portion of it exploring battlefields from WWI and WWII in France.

I'm going in September. Will also hit the Market-Garden sites. Can't wait.

"Colonel James" in this pic is Colonel James Earl Rudder, an Aggie who later became one of A&Ms most revered Presidents.

Not bad.

I'm curious. Did you per chance notice any scarring from flame throwers in any of those bunkers?

I'm not even sure that would be a thing. Just a thought.

Quick question for the OP: is drone photography allowed on those sites?

I went years ago and was struck by verdun, I am at work and do not have the pictures (35mm) but this picture is similar to several of mine. (this is from Wikipedia)

Its like that for miles and miles. There are huge portions of France that are considered "Red Zones" or still uninhabited due to the number of dead bodies and unexploded ordnance.

WWII, Korea and Vietnam were bloody but I doubt any of them were as bad as WWI.
