With what is going on in Ukraine, and this being off season, something happened this week important, at least to me.

We Landed in Yuma, AZ. I was was waiting for luggage wearing my leather veteran’s jacket. A guy with orthopedic right arm comes up to me, says "thank you for your service," and gives me a challenge coin. We talk briefly, me 5th SFG, he was in the Rangers, etc.

I see MOH on the coin, but it doesn't register, because I was distracted. We talked about service, Vietnam, Afghanistan, he tells me his name, and leaves. I look at coin, suddenly go "OMG." It was indeed Leroy Petry, MOH awardee from Afghanistan. I'm an idiot.

I had a 4 Star General give me his coin, but that doesn’t compare to this. MOH. Wow.

That's very cool. Reading he did 8 tours & 6 of them in Afghanistan, what a stud.

Very cool sir. I don't think it's needed but I'm sure it's possible to reach out and acknowledge his MOH.

Thank you for your service. What brought you from Oak Grove to Nola?

What is a Medal of Honor challenge coin? Please educate the rest of us. Definitly a cool story.

Oh you're an idiot (every single one of us that posts here is) but you probably acted less like a fawning idiot because you didn't realize who he was. Seems pretty obvious that he just wanted to say hello to a fellow vet. If he wanted a line of fanboys and fangirls telling him how great he was he could always hold an event or simply attend one of the countless events or holidays we have that are dedicated to service and/or patriotism.

You probably made his day by simply treating him the way you'd treat any other vet you saw. There comes a point where folks get tired of being treated like they did something special, especially when they know that plenty of their brothers and sisters in arms either would've done the same or did do the same but for whatever reason weren't recognized the same.

Thank you for your service.

Challenge coins are awesome. I have one I frequently carry with me, given to me by a neighborhood kid that is currently serving.
