Jay z was never good. He said he was good until everyone believed him. His best albums/songs he didn't write. He has piggybacked everyone in his career.
His first mentor was jaz, hint Sean carter ---> jay z?
The blueprint already existed.
Half of jay z's lyrics are stolen, the other half are written by ghostwriters.
Then nas, whom he turned on an dissed, then got "Ethered".
Since then he's relied on kanye's beats, and featuring other rappers.

Picked up Tech N9ne's album today 
I like buying it since I know exactly who the money is going to and I know the CD will last longer cause I'm gonna be jammin it

I agree with your assumption of Jay-Z. He was/is in my opinion good, but not great. Being from the south I can name a few rappers that could rap circles around Jay-Z and have substance behind the product (i.e Andre 3000) I think he he is gloated and praised because New York needed a "savior" after B.I.G's death and he was the only one who was semi-close to rapping flashy and the streets at the same time.

BuccWildBammer - How does it sound? I'm hit or miss with Tech N9ne, because that horror-core rap gets bland song after song to me. But I must say his rapid fire style and rhyme structure is mind blowing at times.

To me it is the most complete album he has done since "Killer" and there were a few horrorcore tracks on that one, this album arguably really doesn't have any the closest is "I am not a Saint" and even it has a more soul type vibe

B.I.G. dying was the worst thing for Jay IMO because of this factor you hit the nail on the head

See I was like this, but listening to Jay-Z kind of opened the eastcoast gate for me. I was so south-jaded because at the time you had outkast, old cashmoney, mjg + 8ball, swabhouse etc etc dropping such good music that my ears couldn't make it pass the south. Then I heard blueprint and it kind of broadened my horizons. I think he is one of the best.

I think you definitely have to always respect his music because of what he has done for hip hop and what he has accomplished, and he's not the best lyricist but he always is sure to have the fire beats and make his music listenable. He also has never ever been afraid of people featuring on his albums no matter how good they are and how much he is gonna get slaughtered on his own albums...he doesn't care, he is all about providing enjoyable music at the end of the day

I think everybody can agree that Jay-Z is good, but not great. AZ and Lloyd Banks are my two N.Y. favorites. On another note, Killer Mike last two efforts (R.A.P. Music and Run the jewels) are on point.
