So I am driving 9 year old grandson to school today. He asks me out of the blue:

Grandson: "So that gorilla harambe, the one who got that kid that fell in the zoo cage with him...why did the cops have to shoot the gorilla"

Me: "Well, the zookeepers were not really able to tell if the gorilla was saving or hurting the kid, so they didnt risk it and shot the gorilla"

Grandson: "Yeah, but arent Gorillas like really rare?"

Me: Yes.

Grandson: "well there are like billions of people and just a few gorillas. Why didnt the zookeepers just let the gorilla have the one stupid kid?"

Me: "Good point, but people are more important than Gorillas."

Grandson: "but what if the kid was black?"

Me: "Wut?"

Holy shite. I know I shouldn't laugh, but I'm picturing how my dad would react if my nephew said that.

Kid was testing his boundaries; trying to determine where he could/couldn't go in talking about race, and where you stand on the issue. Maybe somebody told him old people are racist.

Or maybe he was trolling you.

Grandson has some autism spectrum issues, not big, but some. So some of the stuff he says doesnt quite come out "right". Pretty sure he was asking me why people were more important than Gorillas since there are more people. (I cant necessarily disagree with him!)

The black thing is a little weird as he has a couple black kids as buds as at school. I think they have some discussions on race between them from time to time.

I can't either! I can see how he might come to that conclusion, considering how many more people there are than gorillas.

Sometimes, in their innocence, children can be brutally honest, and hilariously funny.

Can't wait to experience grandchildren!
