For our state-level analysis, we used CDC data to find out the life expectancy and homicide rate in each state. We then used data from World Population Review to record the mean household income and safety rating for each state and used Data USA to find each state’s rates of mental illness and poverty.
These factors cover a range of different topics, from health and social affairs to economic matters. This provided us with a good overview of the different stresses and strains that people living in these states might experience.
Once we had collected the data, we then combined it into a single “Happiness Score” that gave equal weighting to each factor and produced an overall score out of ten. This allowed us to rank the states by their happiness levels and reveal the happiest and most unhappy parts of the country.
Probably would've been easier, and more accurate, to just ask people how happy they are

The things happening in this country now make all of us unhappy in the more conservative regions of the country.

This is what right to work, lack of good public education and stupid politicians do to states

If I must...
Bush had Gore but even then it took the Supreme Court, because he lost the popular vote, what a looser.
Then Barack got the nod because his first task was against Hilary (in the primary), then John McClain in the main draw, and followed four years later by Mitt Romney.
Then Hilary screwed US again by getting Trump selected, because she's always been unelectable, except in New York.
Who was hated enough to give us Uncle Joe, the marionette doll, and truly another knee jerk reaction to no not that.
or
One lesser evil after the other, after the other, after the other . . .
You may not agree because you loved one of them; however it really doesn't matter when the results bare out the most hated lost, and that was what made us happy.

I hate to get political on this part of the board, well unless its a historical discussion or a discussion on how the government is designed to work (or not work as the case may be) but speaking from a purely historical standpoint... we have not been blessed with a great run of Presidents of late.
It happens. Before Teddy Roosevelt we had a run of Presidents that was, at the very best, thunderously mediocre and often the drizzling poo.
Now, on the OPs post. One problem I have with that sort of thing is that they consider average income but they don't take into account cost of living. You will make a lot less in Bumplehump, Mississippi than you do in Miami Beach, Florida... but I'm guessing the cost of living is going to be a much lower.
I have friends living in the big city who are making what I would consider wonderful money... and almost all of it goes into paying for an apartment that I wouldn't use to store my dirty laundry.
In my experience these things tend to balance out. What you are looking for is the very rare nice wages and low cost of living.
Its why NW Arkansas has grown like a weed in recent decades. The money is good and COLA is low. Though, in all honesty, I expect that to change in the next 10-15 years. The money will still be good but the cost of living is going to climb.

So...is it factoring in average household income, but not cost of living?

This is stupid. Nobody ever asked me. Matter of fact, does anyone remember being asked? I think these rankings are done just to socially engineer minds toward "these states are all bad" type thinking.

Can we just nuke the Texans?
Because it could be pretty nice without all the assholes.

Man, I had a dream this past week that my wife and I moved to a Houston suburb and I woke up craving tacos a go go.

Alabama is obviously the #1 unhappiest state in the SEC.
They can win 10 National Championships in a row
And they are still miserable InsecureU fricks.
Then there’s Auburn.
