I understand being poor. God knows I’ve been there before.
Hey, Dino..where are you located? A Gatlinburg trip isn’t terribly expensive. Nashville, either.
Is Yo Mama’s Bar and Grill still open in NOLA? That peanut butter burger was great when I would go down there.

GW Fins for dinner. Fabulous food and great service! Other than that, the city is a cesspool and filthy

Loved New Orleans when I was in the Navy. Spent many nights on the balcony of Johnny Whites eating crawdads. Would never pick the city to celebrate a wedding anniversary.

Haven't seen many recommendations for the Warehouse District (Lower CBD west of Canal and the Quarter). Here are a few suggestions in that area:
Harrah's Casino
Mothers
Peche Seafood Grille
Mulates (iffy but traditional Cajun, not Creole)
Lucy's Retired Surfers Bar and Grille

IMO, most of the best cities in the world have some seedy and creepy areas along with the quaint and fancy.

WW2 Museum is cool, but it really takes a full day to see it all, and that is if it isn't crowded. We made the mistake of going on Memorial Day and spent a good 5 hours there and didn't see it all.
St. Charles Streetcar through the Garden District is nice.
Aquarium is cool, but if you have been to Chattanooga or Atlanta it seems a bit small. The Insectarium is really cool though, especially the butterfly section.
The museums on either side of St. Louis Cathedral are nice. The one to the right has great exhibits on Katrina and Mardi Gras.
Check out Mardi Gras World. Seeing the props and some of the floats up close is an experience.
Foodwise, you have to go to Café Du Monde if for no other reason than to say you did. We really enjoyed breakfast at Pere Antoine on the corner of St. Ann and Royal. For dinner do yourself a favor and go to Creole House on Canal and get the Taste of the Bayou (Chicken & Andouille Gumbo, Crawfish Etouffee, Red Beans & Rice, and Jambalaya) and then bread pudding for dessert.
Also, depending on the time of year, take a tour of St. Louis Cemetery #1. We made the mistake of going at the first part of June, and it was way too hot and humid to be walking around with all the white stone reflecting the sun around.

Why not go back to the joint that you first picked your wife up in?

The aquarium is cool. Harrah’s casino if you’re into that. Lot of folks come to gamble cause they can’t back home.
Bourbon street between the hours of 5 pm and 11 pm. After 11, the sketchy folks come out. FYI.
Jackson square. French market. Cafe Dumode.
City park and the garden district homes are cool to see as well.
Honestly, New Orleans is a great place to visit if you’re aware of your surroundings. Just stay close to your hotel around 11-12 at night. Don’t go looking for trouble and you won’t get any trouble. The old saying don’t start no shite won’t be no shite is very true in Nola.
