Incredible documentary series. Just crazy that these seriously mentally ill people could come up with such a diabolical scheme. I wanna know what Panetti (2nd pizza delivery guy) would have said.

They were mentally ill but Diehl and Rothstein were both geniuses

They were called geniuses multiple times in the doc, mostly by themselves, but the word genius was thrown around too loosely imo.

They were actually pretty fricking stupid.

Isn’t a genius just someone with an IQ over 130?

The title of the documentary is literally "Evil Genius".

Rothstein stayed out of jail completely. Diehl-Armstrong had several college degrees and was a fairly accomplished academic before she went off the deep end. She got locked up for the one murder but nobody ever got charged for the Wells case.

In what world are they stupid? To even come up with that plan and actually put it into motion is something stupid people could never do. If anybody in this case is stupid besides Brian Wells its the local Eerie law enforcement.

SPOILERS

Rothstein died and that is the only reason he didn’t ever go to jail.

They had a half assed plan to rob a bank for $250k, walked out with $8k that they never even got and ended up in prison.

They also kept a dead guy in a freezer for a long period of time in their homes.

Yeah, I’d call that stupid.

Definitely NOT geniuses. Their bank heist plot was idiotic if their actual goal was to get the money. How the hell did they think they were going to get money without the cops being witness to the exchange? On top of that, the directions were so inefficiently communicated and rambling, that it would have taken the dude his allotted time just to read the freaking things, much less actually execute on them in 50 minutes.

I believe they planned for him to not survive. If Wells actually got the money and they were following him around during the pointless scavenger hunt, they might have just been waiting for the bomb to go off so they could grab the money and run.

Their major mistake was making putting first step of the scavenger hunt in the same parking lot. Why not tell him to drive out of town to find the first clue.

The first major mistake was enlisting someone incompetent to unwillingly execute on a plan that even competent, willing participants would struggle carrying out. Then, yeah, having the guy try to find and decipher the next clue within sight of the scene of the crime was also idiotic.

Their assertions that they were the smartest people in the room coupled with the unnecessarily convoluted and bizarre plan seem prime examples of Dunning Kruger to me.

I think Wells was in on it, he just didn't know the bomb was real until it started beeping. In the bank he was not only calm but in good spirits about the whole thing, even when the police came he was incredibly calm and didn't begin to panic until it started to beep.

They were able to say all the right things to keep from implicating themselves enough to be charged for the particular crime. Rothstein was completely cleared as a suspect and died a free man

I agree it was dumb to put the clue that close to the bank. But I don't think it was ever really about the money anyway, I think it was just two sick individuals who got off on the power of controlling another person and ending their life like that, and then getting away with it.

They weren't as smart as they thought they were, but they were definitely smarter than the Eerie police.

I finished watching it and the entire thing reminded me of Trevor and his gang from GTA V. The two heads were reckless, unstable, manipulative, egotistical and abusive.

Wathced the first ep yesterday and I'm hooked. Tried to watch the 2nd later but fell asleep so need to start that over. I dig that there's only 4 episodes so it'll be a pretty quick watch.
