That is coming. The numbers just aren’t high enough to induce the panic yet.

this logic, shouldn't we just shut down the airports? Roughly 1.8 million people fly in the USA every day.

Probably should have been if we wanted to keep this out, but we don’t live in that kind of world.

Hold on, let's be clear. We still haven't gotten to that point yet. We are still trying to contain it (basically quarantine everyone who has it to stop the spread). However, the possibility of that looks worse by the day.

If things start getting bad, I have seen officials float the idea of restricting flights from some areas.

NBA is discussing plans for possibly holding the games without audiences.
I don't think people travel for XFL games.

This kills at a higher rate than the flu, and it spreads more, so it kind of hurts your misinformed narrative

In the best years, the flu still manages to kill 10,000+ in the US alone. Sometimes 5-6 times that number in bad years.

Every year, year after year after year. Despite vaccinations for it and everything else.

Worldwide the coronavirus has killed 3k people.

Buuuuut there's treatment for the flu, we don't have one for the Coronavirus yet.

That's the panic.

is it just me or does it seem every three or four years we have a virus that is “ going to wipe out half the world’s population”? Swine Flu? Bird Flu? Ebola?

I think if you follow CDC recommendations chances of getting this will be reduced greatly. This too will pass and I’m willing to bet in a couple years there will be something else.

Yep. Although those flu's were much worse than this. I think the swine flu killed like half a million people worldwide(most of it in underdeveloped areas of course, same as all these).

Where to start with this dumb, logic-void post?

A) The coronavirus hasn't even begin its US spread yet and you are comparing it to a years-worth of the flu.

B) The elementary math shows that coronavirus kills at a hire rate than the Flu. I guess you don't believe in division, you can't be helped.

C) The seasonal flu is not going to go away just because of the CV outbreak. We might have to deal with both.

There are treatments and vaccines for the flu.
Its warning symptoms are well understood by the public.
The dangers and risks of the flu are well understood by the public.

None of that applies to this virus, and this one is looking more deadly so far.

Doesn't matter? They have a team in Seattle which evidently is one of the hot beds. Goes for any sport. Are they going to quiz attendants to see where they have been 2 weeks prior to the game?

Once healthy 20 to 50 year olds start dropping dead like flies i'll be concerned.

1.8 million people fly per day. They go see families, they go to restaurants, they go to every business possible under the sun once they get there. Do we close everything down? Who gives the all clear? Trump? CDC? Chuck Shumar? China?

Do you freak out about the flu every year though?

They are not really comparable because you are comparing the flu, which is a disease that is caused by different influenza viruses, to a single virus, COVID-19 (commonly being referred to as corona-virus, even though corona virus is a family of viruses as well.)

Another thing to think about as well is that COVID-19 literally started two months ago. The flu has been circulating for a long time. You're comparing a years worth of flu deaths to two months of COVID-19, which is expected to grow very fast due to its high infectiousness.

Part of the reason for the slow numbers is also due to how quickly we reacted to this virus. If we quarantined every flu patient, don't you think it would have a lower infection rate? I mean Italy is having travel bans over this.

All that to say, MOST people probably won't have too many issues from this. However, there is a very specific subset of people who are very susceptible (Old people and those with pre-existing conditions) portion of the world we need to protect.

This just happened in Italy and it happened in China.
It's how China stopped there's from wreaking complete havoc.
Ultimately it would likely be Trump via advice from the CDC.

I don't think it's going to be as extreme as Italy or China because this is America, but travel restrictions are currently being discussed and foreign travel bans will definitely go into effect - if not by the U.S then by the countries that don't want to risk infection by our citizens.

Only a few people would even require treatment. I just had a nasty bout with the flu less than 2 weeks ago. I'm still dealing with congestion from it, but the worse of it lasted about 3 days.

My "treatment" of that was to drink a lot of extra water and get plenty of rest. Basically laid in the bed a few days.

These guys act like every person who gets this virus will need to be in ICU type environment round the clock and maybe if they are lucky they will live. It's just far from the reality. Most cases will probably go unreported.

What doctor do you have that didn't give you Tamaflu? shite gets you better in 24-42 hours.

You also don't seem to understand that this is a completely different illness. It's nothing like the flu, it causes respiratory problems (assuming it infects the lungs, which is about 15-20% chance even for healthy individuals). That means that the high risk groups are actually bigger because people with asthma or other respiratory complications are at risk whereas that's not too much of a concern with Flu.
