I don't remember you saying that you watched hockey, only you asking me how the NHL was included with the NFL and NBA in my statement. Also, there are MANY other sports that are on tv besides soccer and hockey...you could be a big UFC or WWC fan.
Again, out of curiosity, why do you begrudge the idea of my guessing your favorite sports?

I said I didn't watch watch the NBA or NFL, but what was wrong with the NHL. That implies that I watch the NHL.

Because it really has nothing to do with this discussion.

He said he wants it to be treated like the NHL because in the NHL you can get drafted and still go to college.

Teams hold your rights and when you and them are ready to part you can go pro.

Is that correct Pville? I’m just assuming this

I didn't say that was my reason, but I do prefer that system over how the NFL, NBA, etc do it. I think the NHL team has your rights for 3 years. I will say that I hate all drafts and player should be free to sign with who they want.

You're missing the point. College football as we know it, would cease to exist. It would become a convoluted version of the NFL with kids jumping around to different teams, an entirely new bureaucracy to handle its affairs, outside forces entering the picture to get a piece of the "pie", etc....get the picture?
I'm telling you, once legal money enters the picture of amateur sport, like cancer, it'll kill it.

So the owners with the most money will have the all-star teams, and the others will be fodder for them...reminds me of the old Yankees and Kansas City, their de facto minor league team...and don't use salary cap as a deterrent because they can defer payments for years.

I don't have a problem with that. Can't afford to pay the best players the most money? Think of other ways to attract them.

I'm not crazy about salary caps, but what?

Yeah, frick them for doing what's best for them. You obviously are worried about the individual and not the sport (as if the individual is being abused)
Your political ideology evidently bleeds over into your sports, and the end result would be the "Chicago" of college athletics.

The sport will be fine as long as players are on the field.

So you don't have a problem with that?...you've just destroyed the competitive aspect of sports when you do that.
I'm really surprised that a progressive socialist would take the approach that it's OK for the rich to get richer, and the poor get poorer.

I don't think anyone is actually getting poorer. It's generally accepted as fact that winning teams make the most revenue, and the losers generally don't.

Too many commercials

Getting that way

I was at a championship game in the 90's and was noticing a lot of dead time. Both coaches were at the top of their game and thought all the timeouts were excessive especially as it was the first half. Look over at one of the board and no time outs had been taken by either coach, then it dawned on me they were all what we now know as "media" timeouts.

Not only does it lengthen the game but disrupts flow. Team A has Team B on the ropes and is going for the knockout punch but the advertisers stop the show and get their pitch in. This allows Team B to regroup and go on and win the game. It is a reason I like soccer as flow is determined by play and not artificial breaks.

quote:

Too expensive to attend games

College is still less expensicve than the pros but it is heading that way. Early history in Rome meant smart to allow the masses to attend the games and enjoy time off. In the end it was just the Emperor and the wealthy like the Senators in Rome and it was the being of the end of Rome. Entertainment - especially those involving athletic competition - works best when the masses can be engaged and can afford to attend.

Polo used to draw 120,000 before it was just for the really rich. Boxing drew ell when you could attend with your dad and grandad at matches nearby. Now it is 10,000 for a cheap seat in Vegas and they wonder why it died in the 1980's.

quote:

Too many players making obscene money

Keep in mind I am old when a perk was a suit or a meal so most of sports has become obscene indeed. I followed football because I played and my family played. Dad was just past the leather helmet days when his career in the NFL meant having a real job to pay the bills and support the family. I was good enough for D1 level and got some looks but maybe you got a 20 dollar handshake which was not excessive by any means.

Problem is now it has gotten obscene where massive capital in the US is diverted that could be employed elsewhere. Owner's don't need billion dollar ballparks funded with taxpayers money instead of their own and after say 1 million per year salary is the rest just going to waste on excess and folks looking to strip that money from the ones who earned it? I skipped sports in college to get the education instead and it made life go on. Same can not be said of multiple friends who are broke, in jail, or dead now from all that early loot.
