But there will always be amateur athletics. It may just slide up or down the pyramid, but it will always be there.

Are you actually a college sports fan, but not an NFL, nor NBA fan?

Yes.

Out of curiosity, what do you find about the pro game that you don't like?
Posted on 6/25/19 at 5:33 pm to coachcrisp
No connection to any team and I don't like the sports themselves enough to watch as a neutral. Alabama basketball and football are two of my favorite teams, but basketball and football are my 3rd and 4th favorite sports. If I watch college football and basketball games, it's usually because it affects Alabama's standing.
If I watch the NFL or NBA, I just get bored really quickly. I only watch the 2nd half of each NFL semi and the entire Super Bowl, and I have only watched a handful of NBA games since Jordan retired the 2nd time.

I didn't watch any professional sports (except for the USMNT) between the ages ~10-20.

I think most big time college football players care more about getting to the NFL than team success

Do you honestly believe that there isn't more of a "team" mentality in collegiate sports than there is in the pros?.....that's the real question here.

Regardless of the reason, there is much more of a team mentality in college sport than in the pros...to the pros, it'a a business...they'll even tell you that.

It depends i think it’s high but I think it’s larger at the lower levels
FCS, D2,D3
That’s the purest form of amateur athletics
I think big time college football especially in the SEC is basically semi pro
It’s definitely more “team” than the NFL, but the gap isn’t as wide as it once was
Especially with how large the sport has become
The top kids want to win to improve their draft stock more than anything
And it has not changed my view on either. I will continue to watch both forms of the sport

I used to love the pros but I no longer care...
Too many commercials
Too expensive to attend games
Too many owners getting corporate welfare from taxpayers
Too many players making obscene money

Couldn’t this be said about college football and basketball as well?

quote:You're trying to sell the idea that college athletics and professional athletics are basically the same. I say that's ridiculous. With liberal transfer rules and player compensation, as you suggest, the two will eventually become about the same, and we'll lose an important aspect of our interest in athletics as a whole.

Speak for yourself. I couldn't care less who is wearing the uniform, as long as someone is indeed wearing it.

I can assure you that you're in the minority here. Hell, you've even stated that it's not really important to you unless Alabama is involved and that football and basketball are probably your 3rd and 4th favorite sport. I'm guessing you're a soccer fan, and probably hockey.
I say this to suggest that your sports mentality differs considerably from the norm on most sports forums.

Football would probably climb in my rankings if they could fit the game in a 2 hour window. It just gets really boring when a 60 minute game lasts 3 and a half hours. I'd watch more basketball if they cut out all of the bullshite that happens in the last 3 minutes of the game.

How close was I on my soccer and hockey guess?
Posted on 6/26/19 at 8:56 am to coachcrisp
Well, I already said I watched the NHL, so was hockey really a guess?
Out of the top 5 sports, that left only soccer and baseball as finalists for the other spot. From everything I've said in this thread, I don't see why you would think I like baseball. And I have the Atlanta United logo next to my name. You didn't need to be a detective to figure these things out.
