Nightmares and Dreamscapes is his 3rd collection of short stories.

I think it's his best work.

Check out the short story "The Moving Finger" about an accountant who sees a finger coming out of the bathroom drain.

Most his early novels are pretty good. His more recent novels just aren't my cup of tea for the most part but I am going to read the one about the Kennedy assassination.

YES

I freak my friend out with that story. He gave me my copy of N&D back after that.

Of his short story collections, Road Virus Heads North from Everything's Eventual is solid as well.

Most will pick them though. I can't blame them, he is a hard writer to muscle through.

Eh, I've read plenty of his full length novels. Just prefer his short stories and novellas personally. I don't know why they shouldn't be considered "books" though.

I think we've briefly discussed Road Virus Heads North. Thought it was a bit unnerving initially reading, but seeing it on TV sorta took all of that away. I liked it, but it lost it's edge of eeriness.

Somethings need to be left purely to imagination...

I never saw the TV version and I'm glad I haven't because I think you're right about some things just don't translate well. Still creeps me the hell out when I read it.

I think "toning down" his writing in converting it to an acceptable show takes a lot out of it as well.

I didn't mind Tom Berenger as the lead though...

I just finished Under the Dome. Strong start, but by the last 100 pages I was just trying to get to the end. I read 11/22/63 not too long ago and thought it was very good.

My favorite is The Talisman(w/ Peter Straub), but I was 12 when I first read it, so that might have something to do with it.

My thoughts exactly. Didn't like the ending too much. Even though it was expected somewhat. Incredible first half I thought

Does anyone recall the name of the story where the guy was essentially paid to pour change into the runoff drain?

It also occurred to me that if you removed all the "good guys" from the book, the fate of the town would be essentially the same. They didn't really accomplish anything other than the jailbreak.
