I know MANY times movies don't do books justice, but I just don't see how the Shining could be better than the movie. Of course that's completely without merit because I haven't read the book, but the movie was just so perfectly scary and awesome. Did you read the book before or after seeing the movie?

He creates characters so well. So much other fiction you read and either every character all sounds the same or like some stereotype. But he nails it every time.

Yes. He captures The small-town, drunk, abusive red-neck is so well.

Absolutely, and I mean absolutely, hated every bit of Gerald's Game.

I read the first chapter and was like WTF? I quit reading after that. It wasn't even a conscious decision, I just didn't have any desire to keep reading and eventually forgot about it and moved on to something else.

The best thing to do if you're reading a book and you've already seen the movie on which it was based, is to just put the movie out of your mind. Don't try to compare the two, they're two totally different animals.

I unfortunately watched the movie first. The movie was a big part of pop culture by the time I was born and I had seen the movie numerous times before I even started reading novels.

And that sucks because I was picturing Jack Nicholson & Popeye's wife in my head the whole time while I was reading it, which wasn't supposed to be intended. The book still scared the shite out of me regardless.

I muscled through it for the hope that it got better, only for it to get worse. He tries to create a something out of the usual, then tried to turn the "King" on in the last chapter. The only one I've hated so far.

And I liked Cell, From a Buick 8(actually the 1st King book I ever read), and even though it caused an awful tragedy, Rage. Tommyknockers, and I still don't think I've read my copy of Under the Dome or finished Full Dark, No Stars.

His son actually has done some pretty good work as well...

I like From a Buick 8 as well. Maybe I should try Cell. It seemed ridiculous to me, but maybe it's not what I thought it was.

That new zombie movie that's coming out kinda reminded me of it.

I had to delay my reading of it initially as the copy I ordered went from English to Spanish like 10 pages in.

I've got to go through my shelf and start up some again. Tried to do so with Everything's Eventual around Christmas, but I put it down.

he's written some crap but I liked Salem's Lot, Christine, The Dead Zone, Pet Semetary, Misery, Dolores Caliborne was fantastic to me, and I seem to remember one about a lawyer touched by a gypsy and proceeds to lose weight, can't remember the name, maybe it was a short story

What?

What tragedy? He pulled it because of Columbine, but it had nothing to do with the actual event taking place.

Hell, there is no evidence that the kids even read the book.

Rage was a good book though.

There were actually 3 or 4 incidents that involved shootings where people had copies of Rage, and he found this upsetting.

Columbine was Catcher in the Rye, if memory serves.

I felt the same about it being ridiculous to get nightmares from a book until I read The Shining. It's hands down the scariest thing I've ever read. I slept with the lights on the entire time I was reading it, and at least two weeks after I finished.

I never heard that. I know John Lennon's killer was obsessed with Catcher in the Rye.

I read the book before seeing the movie, and even though Jack Nicholson was great, the book was much, much better than the movie, IMO.
