The better question is mountain/lake or beach.
I'd choose mountain/lake (we have a few here in Arkansas) but that's just me. You can enjoy an awesome day on the water and then picturesque mountain views back at the cabin.

Due to my job I have had the pleasure of going to or driving through just about every Colorado location and parks.
I would venture to say if most get the chance to see some of the scenery that the Colorado Rocky Mountains offer they would be impressed as hell.
Do not get me wrong, I grew up around beaches and love it, but I could not choose between the two.
If you ever get the chance to travel the mountain towns when the leaves are changing colors during Autumn, it is a sight to see.

Mountains, by far. I don't give a shite about the beach, unless it involves a boat and fishing.

Mountains.
Coincidentally I'm looking at them through my office window right now.
Lived in both the Sierra Nevadas and the foothills of the Smokies (Knoxville).
Wouldn't trade it for anything

To live: mountains by far.
Vacation: either and depends on season and location. For a few days I'd probably prefer a beach.

Or go to Kauai and get the best of both. Beautiful beaches with mountains rising to 4000 ft within 5 miles inland. Stand on Hanalei Bay Beach and count the waterfalls dropping down the mountains behind you.

I like beaches next to Mountains, i.e. Costa Rica. Pura Vida

Who the frick wants to spend a week on a boring arse mountain?
I'd rather risk swimming with the sharks than looking over my shoulders for a banjo picking hillbilly on a fricking rock.
