Really been wanting to learn to play for a long time. Now I'm seriously considering learning with an acoustic. Any info about guitars that would be a good beginner and be sufficient for after I learn the basics? Certain brands or types I should avoid? I really like the look of resonators. What say you and thanks in advance.

Make sure the action is low on any acoustic you buy because if not you'll be stuck with a guitar that is unnecessarily hard on beginners.

Look for 000 size, or anything smaller than a dreadnaught. It will make it easier to learn.

Don't be afraid to order online, musciansfriend.com is your friend.

Don't spend more than $250

Justinguitars and Marty Schwartz are nice free online resources for beginners.

There is an acoustic guitar forum online, google it, I always go there and get opinions before I make a purchase.

This. I often recommend beginners to start with an electric so they can build up fretting strength.

Also, spend a little money on your first one. Don't get some pos that doesn't play worth a damn. It will only help you to stay with it in the long run.

Start with a cheap electric or classical. Easier on the fingers.

I didn't know how to play. I went and bought a Taylor acoustic. I figured I spent that much, I better learn how to play the damn thing.

I would stay away from a resonator to begin. They can have a high action which will make fretting harder on a beginner.

Figure out what price range you're in and then go to every guitar shop around and look, touch, play and discuss each guitar in your price range. Two guitars that are the same brand and model can play differently, and feel differently in your hands…so the more you look at the better chance you have at getting one you like.

Acoustics are good, although they can be a little tougher on the fingers to begin with. Electrics are good too and easy to fret, but it's hard to bring an amp out to the campfire with the girls.

That's why you've got to play everything in your price range. Brands aren't as important as sound and feel. I've seen blues players with $99 Fender Squires that sound great…so focus on that, unless you don't think you'll stick with it. If that's the case then find something with a little resale value from the upper-mid tier of the guitar world.

If you have a friend that plays, take him with you to help you.
Buy the best guitar that you can afford, purchase an electronic tuner.

Learn acoustic first. With that you'll learn the chords and rhythm and once you've gotten decent at that the move on the electric.

Gibson Hummungbird or Taylor 814ce are great guitars for beginners.
