1. The civil war was an American Holocaust
2. The civil war was not about slavery
3. Lincoln was a racist
4. We don't negotiate with terrorists
5. America was not built on slavery
quote:

Gavin McInnes of TheRebel.media talks about the Confederate flag controversy from the perspective of a Canadian immigrant to the U.S.

He notes that while Canadians (and especially Quebeckers) are often focused on language, Americans are fixated on race. McInnes offers five reasons why Americans shouldn't ban the Confederate flag.

Yes, he was. But that was 150 years ago - it literally and figuratively has no bearing on today.

Eh, there were much bigger issues to southern states than slavery that led to the civil war.

Wait.... The government is going door to door and forcing people to give up their flags?

Wrong!

Please go read the individual states' reasons for secession and come paraphrase them for us.

sure, but the norths stance on slavery was ultimately the driving force that lead to seccession. the war was not only about slavery, but its the topic that drove it

No. It was slavery. It was going to fundamentally affect their wallets and that was the problem. There was no bigger issue than slavery.

Meh. Read the ordinances that approved secession for the various states.

Face it. You have a very pretty g/f that is great in the sack, but she is bat-shite crazy. When you go out with her, she's out there picking fights for you. You don't want to be in a fight. While you are trying to diffuse the situation, she's gone off and gotten arrested and is trying to kick the window out of the back seat of a cop car.

It's time to move on.

Wowzers, when you want to make a whale of a proposition like that, it's usually pretty prudent to try to substantiate it in SOME way. Wtf kind of half-assed obtuse shite is this? Please go read Alexander Stephens' 'Cornerstone Speech,' and then come back and try to tell me and everyone else that there were "much bigger issues." The Confederate $100 bill has a picture of slaves on it, for shite's sake. I don't like wading into all that PC shite, but historical facts are historical facts. Giving these half-assed equivocations about what the war was "really about" makes folks look like intellectually dishonest pussies imo. I've lived in the South all my life, but I'm not going to try to whitewash my state's history to feel better about myself or some shite.

The civil war was not about slavery. It was about the federal government overstepping their bounds. Unfortunately, one of those issues was slavery but that was not the sole reason. If it was about slavery, why did Licoln wait until the end of the war to abolish slavery? He only used this as a bargaining chip to demoralize the South.

We can't ask the Southern political leadership why they seceded. But we can read the states' declarations of secession.

Here they are:
LINK

I'll give you a summary: There's several things we aren't happy about, but the main thing is the Federal government is no longer protecting our property rights, specifically our slave property. They are misguided in conferring the rights of U.S. citizens to slaves. The Negro's natural place is in subservience to the White race. The federal government no longer serves or respects our most critical right, so we are seceding.

Look, it all sounds crazy in 2015. Alot of water under the bridge since then. But that's why they did it. They just could not imagine the kind of society we have now even barely functioning. Not that we don't have a good bit of social tension. They just didn't see it as a possible alternate.

The core reason for the civil war was about states rights. I thought most everyone knew that, until I started reading threads on TD. Revisionist history only matters to the revisionists.
