Very unusual. Heads up for the Auburn folks while they try to figure this out

If I had to look at those ugly colors every day I would have eye cancer too.

I didn't know you could even get melanoma on your eyes, very scary.

That has to be a cluster, right?

They were investigating this as very unusual when they only knew of four cases in a post on here a few months ago. Now they've identified 36 in the area, which is about 750x the rate of natural occurrence, and they don't think that's evidence of a cluster?

That is odd. 6 people out of every million develop this cancer, so 36 people out of one university and then 18 from a town in North Carolina with only 54 thousand residents is damn peculiar.

You will get odd patterns in statistics from time to time but this is extreme.

That pretty terrible. Did you know that more than 1000 cancer clusters are reported to state health departments each year?

So is an an absolute anomaly, or is there some weird origin causing cancer of the eye in Auburn?

What could possibly cause this, a specific allergen or pollutant? So weird.

I think it said some were room mates. Weird

While this is scary tragic, the cluster might actually lead to a root cause of the condition. These people almost certainly have something in common other than the geographic location itself.

My theory is tanning bed use with them going to a place that had defective goggles or didn’t require goggles. Apparently they are all female.

That would make a ton of sense, I think you might be on to something.

Word on the ladies Facebook “street” Is that all of the girls lived in dorms 9 and 10 and there was a major mold problem that was later remediated.

I suppose that might be possible, but I don't think mold is a known cause of ocular melanoma. Pretty messed up if it was because of untreated mold.

36 cases in a population where the statistically expected number of cases would be right around zero is pretty shocking. I hope they identify the cause quickly.
