Cuonzo Martin was coaching D1 P5 already before Underwood even got his first head coaching job at age 50.

Underwood definitely wasn't on my list. Admittedly, CM was 3 after GM and TC, but I still think it's a solid hire. I think he can make hay at MU.

I'm fine with it. Porters or not.

Ok buddy

2 rd 32's in 4 years > 1 s16 9 years. That's just the truth.

Underwood made the rd 32 twice with a non-major team where Cuonzo only did it once because to his luck, Mercer beat Duke.

Brad Underwood is a better hirer than Cuonzo Martin. And also a more exciting brand of basketball. All I'm saying.

Better hire? Maybe, maybe not wait a year or 2 before deciding that.
More exciting, yea, but if Martin gets Mizzou to winning 24-25 games a year there will be plenty of excitement.

If I want someone to run a basketball clinic and Bob Huggins is not available maybe I call Brad Underwood.i'm not sure Brad Underwood is in the top five names of a person I would pick to build a college program. I'm not saying he's a bad hire. I'm just not saying he's in my top five.

I don't buy that. Almost every D1 program (not ivy league of course) looks the other way when it comes to athletes GPA and test scores. So long as they are NCAA eligible, they are getting in.

I don't know that they would still do it, and in fact don't think they do, but SLU at one time turned kids down that were otherwise eligible.

I think it's great you are basically taking what he did at some Mid Major as proof he will be great head coach at a big school. He coached 1 year at Oklahoma St. He hasn't had to play with his recruits. I just don't see how you can spin this into "he's a great coach" simply because of a winning percentage over 4 years, only 1 of which was with a big program.

Don't know either one of them so I can't tell. Counzo looks like he can recruit. If he can't that 17M contract gonna make us sad.

They put some of his first team meeting online and I wasn't that impressed. I would have been building them up on a first meeting talking about how hard they fought and what we can build on. He talked about how they need to win and they gotta work really hard. and he did it in a quiet monotone

Does anyone really coach anymore? You get the best recruits, they play great street ball for a year, then move on. Seems to me you need a great recruiter and program master. Xs and Os are pretty far down the list.

Guess we'll see.

If guys can shoot, they can shoot. I think Martin is focusing on the one thing a lot of kids don't do, play defense. If you have shooters that can play defense, you will have a good team.

Obvious troll attempt. Confirmed with the can't be hard to recruit to Cal because it's the state school comment. UCLA is the state school for basketball.

Fair. But when I consider his time at Stef F Austin, a combined record of 89-14 with pretty much nobody...for me, his coaching doesn't come into question. Every year at Stef F he returned a top 10 national winning percentage. Top 10 out of 350 something schools 3 years in a row. Then he takes a bad Ok St team and returns 20 wins in his first year. I'm not going to say that I'm certain this guy is going to be great, but I certainly like his odds. Consider this: He's 4-4 in years making the tournament. Cuonzo is 2-9. If I'm choosing a coach, I'm taking a risk in the guy that is 4-4. Sure there are questions about his recruiting, but his coaching record speaks for itself. Taking risks are part of being successful. Choosing the safe pick pretty much will get you what you're looking for, most often average results.

Stephen F Austin plays in the fricking Southland conference.

In 3 years he went 2-5 against ranked teams.

He played 7 ranked teams in 3 years

5 of which were in the tournament
