I was reading pio's top 4 basketball teams in the SEC thread and saw a Tennessee fan talking about how Cuonzo underachieves every year.

So that got me thinking. As humble Mizzou fans, what are our expectations for this year?

Where are we setting the bar to where we say "If Cuonzo doesn't do this, he underachieved this year"

How many games should we win?

How far should we get in the tournament if you expect Mizzou to make the tournament?

Finish at least in the top 4 in the SEC.

Make a run to at least the sweet 16.

Truth be told though, I think we can be better than that. The roster is truly elite.

Kentucky and Duke have better rosters. After that, Mizzou has every right to make a strong argument.

First year, new system, lots of freshmen.

I'm expecting 5th in the SEC and bubble for the NCAA

No fan of CCM but it almost has to be top 2 finish in the SEC and a sweet 16 run at a minimum.

How in the world could you not be a fan of Zo?

He's been a revelation thus far.

I think this is where I'm at too. I know we are talented, but like you said, lots of freshmen.

Here's we got for possible starters

Barnett / SR (transfer from Texas last year)
Robertson / SR (grad transfer this year)
Phillips / JR
Puryear / JR
MPJ / FR
JP / FR
Tilmon / FR
Harris / FR
Roberts / FR

There's not a whole lot of veteran leadership on this team from players who have been at Mizzou. Other than Phillips and Puryear, these are all new faces from the team two years ago. I think that will have a negative impact on this team. When you combine that with the talent, I say a top 5 finish in the SEC and any tourney bid we can get would be good. I would also like an advancement to the round of 32. That's my expectation.

In his second year at Cal Cuonzo had a recruiting class similar to this one. That team was a 4 seed in the NCAA tournament.

Cuonzo underachieved at Tennessee? They hated his choice for HC from the beginning. And lets face it, Tennessee fan thinks everything they do is gold. What exactly is underachieving at Tennessee basketball. Only the ladies team matters. This is the same fanbase that ran off Fulmer, enough said.

Tennessee hated Cuonzo because they lost Pearl to the NCAA. They never embraced him.

Yeah, he did seem to struggle a bit to match expectations, but he performed at a much higher level than our last two coaches and probably on par with the later version Mike Anderson (everything after his Elite 8 year).

I don't know why some of you consistently set yourself up for heart break but this may be another case of it. Yeah we got some damn good, elite recruits but that doesn't mean success is coming. Like many here who has been around long enough knows, we can easily shite the bed just as easily as make some great run in year 1 of a new regime. I hope we do as good as you think, but I'm just more pessimistic or realistic, depending on ones opinion.

It's kinda best to just let JQ do the JQ and ignore it.

Yeah you're probably right. Some people just have to learn the hard way. Although I hope he is right after what we have been through.

Or you could spend your whole life being a loaf of white bread...

Look, this roster is talented enough for a Final 4 run. Yes, we have a lot of (very talented) freshman, but we also counter that with some quality veteran players. Several teams have made deep runs with rosters just as young (if not more l) than ours.

Here's the difference though. I'm not going to bury the guy and go on repeated "Zo sucks" rants if we don't. It's realistically possible. That's my point. Guys like COU will put out these ridiculously low expectations so they can paint themselves as "realistic and grounded", but then turn around and act like the coach is dog shite for doing exactly what they said they would do. Lol

I don't get it at all, but we have a large group of our fanbase that is happiest when they are miserable. I picture a dark cloud floating around dude's head daily.

Ok, white bread.

Outside of Duke and Kentucky...name me 3 or 4 teams that have better rosters than we do.

I'll wait.

I think we finish 2nd behind Kentucky in the SEC

4-6 seed in the tournament, lose in the 2nd round.

Overall win total in the 25-28 range.

Michigan State, Arizona and UCLA are better.
Florida probably has a better roster.
North Carolina returns much of their championship roster. There’s probably a few others that I could find if I looked at top rosters. Mizzou will have the most talented player in every game this season.

Well I'm not going to hammer ya bud. The difference between you and some of us older guys is we've been through enough shite storms to look at this cautiously. I remember how optimistic, and yes, unrealistic I was at your age (Im guessing you at early 20s). Again, I hope you are atleast partially right, just have my doubts.
