App State running back Darrynton Evans' NFL dreams are on hold – for now

NEW ORLEANS — Whether it be quick or slow, short or extensive, Darrynton Evans might have a decision to make after the New Orleans Bowl on Saturday.
The Appalachian State running back with lightning speed and dynamite vision has shown out in 2019, and at this point the NFL would surely welcome him.
Evans has 1,323 rushing yards and 23 touchdowns. That scoring total is tied for second in the nation with Western Michigan’s LeVante Bellamy, trailing only Wisconsin’s Jonathan Taylor (26). The Mountaineers junior has had five games of at least three touchdowns, which includes all of the last three games, and he has rushed for more than 130 yards four times this season.
At New Orleans Bowl media day today, Evans quickly dispatched any talk of an early departure to the pros.
“I mean, all talk is good talk, but I’m just trying to win a game right now – that’s what I’m trying to do, Evans said. He later added, “Growing up, every kid playing football is dreaming about going to the NFL.
“But I’m not there, but I can’t really say too much on it. And I haven’t really done anything yet.”
Even still, Evans can appreciate how much he has thrived. When Eli Drinkwitz took over the program, he promised to get the ball to playmakers. The wide receiver trio of Corey Sutton, Thomas Hennigan and Malik Williams benefited from the change in play style, but Evans really shined.
He’s scored long touchdowns, and he’s been destructive at the goal line for opposing defenses. Evans pointed to the execution of teammates and trust from the coaching staff that’s really made it all work.
“Yeah, that’s crazy," Evans said. "It’s just hats off to the coaches, Putting us in the right positions to make plays and working throughout the summer, all the spring, coming off a coaching change. We just had to buy in.”
I'd say it's yet another sign we've got a good one here.

This would be a badass hire.
I have a feeling this will be a good start for Mizzou starting next year. Both on the field and recruiting will be much better. Glad to see a change of coaching tree. Reason that is a plus is Gus is doing well at Auburn and Drinkwitz is from that coaching tree. Good recruiting and good at coaching. Also a plus is he is knowledgeable on the offense.
This should get the fans back into the game and see a good offense than seeing BO and his bad offense and clueless decision making.

Since most of the assistants Drink has hired have some association with him, I thought I'd try to see if there's an OLine coach from his past who might share his offensive philosophy.
Looking at his past associations...
Auburn OL Jeff Grimes: now OC at BYU
NC State OL Dwayne Ledford: now OC at Louisville
App State OL Shawn Clark: now HC at App State
That leaves the OL coach at Arkansas State, Brad Bedell who is the OLC at Boise State.
Boise is playing tommorow in the Las Vegas Bowl against Washington (the game ironically followed by App State's bowl game). Bedell worked with Drink when he was the co-offensive coordinator under Bryan Harsin at Arkansas St. in 2013.

Brad Bedell is entering his third season as the Broncos' offensive line coach in 2019, having joined the staff prior to the start of the 2017 season.
Bedell, who previously worked under head coach Bryan Harsin at Arkansas State, had most recently served as the assistant head coach and offensive line coach at Lamar, where he was hired in January 2017 following a season at Baylor.
In Bedell’s first year with the Broncos, four of Boise State’s starting five linemen received all-conference recognition, highlighted by center Mason Hampton, who received first-team accolades. Hampton was also named a finalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy, awarded annually to college football’s top scholar-athlete. Additionally, Ezra Cleveland, Archie Lewis and John Molchon picked up all-league recognition.
In 2018, Cleveland and Molchon repeated as all-league selections, each picking up first-team honors after helping to pave the way for a 10th-straight 1,000-yard individual rushing performance, the longest active streak in the country and tied for the third-longest streak in college football history, behind only North Carolina (12; 1973-84) and Texas (11; 1995-2005).
The Broncos’ offensive line also protected quarterback Brett Rypien, who was named the 2018 Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year following the season, and helped Boise State conclude the season ranked in the top 25 nationally in both total offense (21st; 459.5 yards per game) and scoring offense (20th; 35.4 points per game).
It appears Boise's OL regressed this year (sounds familiar) but he's the only OL coach with Drinkwitz connections who hasn't moved into a better situation on paper.
I guess we'll know his choice soon enough.

Bedell has 3 all league selections this year and an honorable mention. 4 of 5 starters is solid work.

From a technical stand point, I think he'd be a great hire. Recruiting might be a question mark.

I'd go after Elarbee if I was Drink. The 2016 and 2017 onlines were sound zone blocking units and weren't soft by any means.

When Elarbee left to go to UCF I read where a few Mizzou o-linemen said that he never taught them technique, but always emphasized just beat the man in front of you.

I thought that was the OLine coach who played for Mizzou and ended up going to Illinois I think. He was criticized by players for not teaching techniques

Players throwing shade at a coach that left them shouldn't come as a surprise. The bottom line is onfield product. Crockett ran for 1000 yds behind his first line and Ish Witter had a 1000 yd season behind his 2nd.

So Barry Odom is an afterthought?
I am glad I am no longer a Barry Odom support. This will be war against BO since he is now the DC at Arkansas!
