Sorry for the off-topic but I really need some advice from you guys. I have a big decision to make for college in the next couple months, and as usual, I'm under a lot of pressure.
My dad went to MU, so I have grown up around it. It has been my dream school ever since I was in kindergarten. It's to the point that whenever I go to CoMo I just feel at home.
But, since I have declared I am going to Mizzou, I have been getting a lot of shite for it. I have a lot of extremely smart friends, some of which are going to Penn. and Cornell, and they seem to make fun of me all the time for "just going to Mizzou", and that Im not reaching my potential by just going to a "party school". They keep pushing me to go to Indiana, Purdue, and a couple other places. My dad, who is an MU grad, doesn't even want me to go there, he wants me to go to a school to play school-sponsored hockey. But that's not really what I want.
I just think people underestimate Mizzou, and assume that you'll be living homeless if you go there. I just need your guy's input. Did you like it there? Would you go there again if you could do it over again? Were you ever denied a job opportunity just because you went to Mizzou? I know most of what they are saying is BS, but its gotten in my head.
Again, thanks for reading and responding if you do, I can delete this after i get a few responses.

Thats what Im saying. There are a lot of idiots from my school last year that go to MU, so I guess that is what they think of it as. But I know MU is a good academic school. I dont know, I just reed some re-enforcement.

Your choice of which college to go to is a big decision. I was in a similar position as yourself, had multiple scholarship offers for baseball from smaller institutions and multiple academic offers from more prestigious institutions but I always wanted to be a Tiger.
I have to say I spent some of the best years of my life at Mizzou and looking back even today, I would not change the decision I made. Great things are being done at the University of Missouri and your college experience will be what you make it to be. If you want to party like a rock star you can do that and if you want to change the world you can do that as well.
I dont know what field you are trying to go into but a degree from Mizzou will look just the same to a prospective employer as a degree from IU or Purdue.
Good luck with your decision and enjoy the ride wherever it takes you.

My daughter graduated from Mizzou in '11 with two degrees, honors in both cases, in 4 years.
She would tell you it's a wonderful campus with great people/sports/rec center/sororities, (she's a Theta)etc. I personally think the columns w Jessie behind them make for the coolest campus quad in America. ESPN game day against OK was awesome!
Mizzou has it's own nuclear reactor, it's one of 5 that offers degrees in law, vet, doc,... (somebody help me here.) AAU, Land grant school, it goes on and on.
My daughter took two years off to teach English in China and is now at grad school at the Kings College in London. The education she got a Mizzou
was a big part of getting her in the door at KCL.
She was up against applicants from around the world, I think 5 in her program are from the U.S.
Also, don't discount the relationships you will have with other Missouri students. There
is nothing better than being a Missouri kid at Mizzou IMHO.
PS, if you want to party it's there, it's up to you to set prioritys. Don't knock some chick up and make sure to always make the bell for class!

If you are planning on going into an executive position for certain Fortune 500 companies, then you need to weigh your options very carefully..... for grad school. The university on your diploma will make far less difference in your life than about 15 other factors. Mizzou's reputation is such that it's not going to hamstring your career in any foreseeable way unless you are going into some niche field. And even then, it's probably all about the grad school.

Thanks bass, my friends insist that companies judge you by the school on your diploma, and not the type of person you are and your capabilities. Its really weird, and I've been telling them that its not true.

The only place I can foresee you being denied a job just because you went to MU is at a small company in Kansas. So don't do that. Stay out of Kansas.
I graduated from SMS in Springfield. I earned my masters at UCM in Warrensburg and attended law school at MU. Depending on what you want to do in life, you may want to think about another university. For example - there is no better school that MU for journalism. That doesn't mean the education is that much better, but the reputation is. If you want to sit on the Supreme Court one day, you don't go to MU. You go to Harvard, Yale, or another Ivy League.
If you want to do something in the tech field, MIT is the gold standard.
Hopefully, you see where I am going. I love MU. If you come here you will get an excellent education. But depending on what you want to do, you may have better opportunities somewhere else.
Good luck. It is a tough decision.

A little bit of research will quickly show you that Mizzou is a world class university. If you couldn't take 5min to find that out on your own, maybe your acceptance was a mistake!
On a more serious not, Mizzou's average SAT/ACT scores for freshman was regularly #1 in the Big 12 and I think it has only trailed Vandy in the SEC. Look at the number of CEOs that come through Mizzou and it rivals any school out there.
Mizzou engineering students regularly dominate the so called "ivy" league schools in engineering competitions with little budgets and little faculty participation. The quality of student at Mizzou (overall, there are exceptions) is as good as anything out there.

I know it's a big decision but in a way it's also not. Outside of the Ivy League schools, it doesn't matter which school you choose. It's all about what you put into it. If you apply yourself, you will do well, whether it's at Mizzou, Purdue, Indiana, Florida or wherever. My daughter is going through it and all I tell her is if she's looking at a bad school, I'll let her know. Otherwise your decision can only be good or good. You just have to decide what's important to you. Playing hockey for example.

I have taken loads of time to do this research. College Confidential and College Prowler are one of my most visited websites (along with SECr). And my major is business, which is IU's strong point. Im not sure, but I almost kind of want to switch to journalism. I did newspaper for a year in high school and really thrived in it. My writing was one of the best in the class. I love sports, and having a sports-related job would be awesome, even if I couldnt make entirely too much money. In that case, Mizzou would be better.
I've read all of the stats and everything, I came here to get more of an emotional perspective on it. I just want to make sure its not a trash school where everyone is drunk all the time, and the academics are really what it was said to be. I want to make the right choice, and I want to go somewhere that I love to be at. This is what attracts me to MU and not IU, Purdue, Michigan, etc.

School is what you make of it. If you're not from an upper class family the choice between in state and out of state is a big deal unless you've got some scholarships. If your friends are super smart, they're probably getting some help to go to the Penn and Cornells or even the Purdues and Indianas.
In state tuition makes a big difference, and going into super debt to get a prestige degree isn't usually worth it unless you're going Ivy or high level (Washington, Vanderbilt, Stanford, Northwestern, etc). If it came down to the difference between a Mizzou and a Purdue, I'd save half the money and go to Mizzou.
I had a similar choice with the in state stuff. My choices were the Nevada schools or the directional Illinois school due to available in state tuition. I really wanted to go to Mizzou, ERAU, or Purdue, but the money makes a difference.
Think logically and make the right decision. Hell, even if you wind up at Purdue you'll still be able to like Mizzou sports, have you seen their athletic department lately?

As someone with multiple degrees from MU (business and law), I think with a few exceptions it doesn't matter where you go to school. If anything, it will have an effect on your first job. After that, nobody cares about what school you went to; they just care about how you will perform.
If you are planning on getting a business degree, the difference between Mizzou and a Big 10 School like Indiana will make virtually no difference, with the only exceptions being if you are in an area with a lot of graduates from one of the two schools as you might get an interview based on being an alum. If you want to go to an Ivy League school then that would make a difference, or a school like Vandy, Washington University or another school on the edge of The Ivy League, but otherwise I think I would go where I thought I would be happy.
If you are going for something really specific then there might be an advantage of going to a school that specializes in that. I don't know that there are any undergraduate schools whose business schools are heads and tails above the rest of their peers.

Go to Mizzou for undergrad and have the best time of your life. You will be far enough away from your family to feel totally independent and close enough to your family to get back easily for the holidays.
Do very well academically, go to a major city post graduation for a few years, then get your MBA from a top 20 b-school. Then profit.
Seriously though, Mizzou is a wonderful place. The only people that didn't enjoy it were the kids who weren't prepared for a major college experience away from their parents. You don't sound like that type to me. Enjoy the ride.

It seems to me that there is some self-hate toward Mizzou from some parts of the state. Yes, there are people in St. Louis who look down at Mizzou because it's their state school. These are often the same people who want to get out of Missouri altogether. Unless you're going Ivy League, a Mizzou education is just fine, and as good as any other big school. Better than a lot of places. Plus, it's an AAU institution, and that's nothing to turn your nose at.
Your friends who are telling you Indiana or Purdue are just expressing an opinion, and not one based in fact. Of course you should at specific programs if you're very sure of what you want to do. But if not? Mizzou is a great choice.
