Is Garrett Riley the answer?

Do we move on from Lindsey and let Riley run the offense? I know Drink is going to want OZ, but so what, Mizzou executes that well. But maybe Riley will have a better flow with the #1 QB in CFB next year.

No way he returns as QB coach, so really it comes down to which coach do we keep, Riley or Lindsey?

Only way the scheme changes is hope somebody takes Drink off our hands and give the head coaching job to Riley or anybody not running a G5 offensive scheme ...

There was one play 3rd and long, deep in our territory and crowd started booing immediately after snap. They knew it was a handoff to Roberts. If the crowd knows what’s coming, that’s a problem.

And if we had Simmons instead of Pribula last season ... we were a playoff team ...

But the red zone offense this year is nuts

Saw the same thing in Starkville.

Up 7. Starting 4th quarter with ball on our 20 something ...

And the playcalling was atrocious. Didn't actually throw much until down 7 with 5 minutes left ...

Staple Drink playcalling

I recall in that game we were up with 13 minutes or so in the 4th. Don’t know why, but immediately did the math on how many more possessions. Recall thinking if we went 3 and out on that possession we were losing. I give Drink credit on defense, been solid. Offense is frustrating. Moments of brilliance followed by long stretches of predictable, stuck in the mud play calling.

I don’t know if it’s analytics or gut feeling, but he’s running different calculations to decide how wide open the offense should be. And it’s never in favor of running hot.

We blame Drink, but this is also a Lindsey problem. His offense has also been boring at other stops. My vote is no way Lindsey learns new tricks over the off season, give Riley a chance and let him keep developing Simmons at the same time.

I agree but it’s not like Drink hasn’t had a similar pattern in prior years. Riley with a drink influence is going to be more of the same in my opinion. I have no X and O knowledge. But I’m pretty good at predicting our play calling after the 1st qtr.

I get it, but Drink and Lindsey are 2 people with no imagination or playcalling flow. Maybe Riley gives us a 50% chance at better playcalling.

I mean 1 of them is leaving anyway. Which is better for the offense to keep?

Good point. After Florida game, I thought we had changed our stripes. Seems like Drink gets more conservative the more success he has.

Not sure about that. Starting with Brady, it has been a pattern. Really good looking QB play for first 4 games and then poof. Mediocre QB play at BEST the rest of the year.

i dont quite understand how the Florida game would have done this. The Florida game was the exact same turtling but the difference was Roberts busted 2. I'm not sure he had a run over 7 yards in the 2nd half other than the 2 TD runs.

If I recall correctly, Florida 1st half was heavy pass first. Several explosive plays.

Simmons is 5x the QB Pribula is/was ...

He's still making bad reads but Pribula was making single read, one option passes ...

Reason UVA is garbage this year

Drink deserves credit for building the program. He has lifted the floor and produced 2-3 teams with really high ceilings that they did not reach. (Feels like an evaluation of Pinkel)

It feels like Drink and his various staffs have showed the ability to build a Top 10-15 roster. Unfortunately, that has been matched with a Top 25-level game day coaching ability.
The best teams - the ones we are chasing and want to beat - have a Top 10-level roster AND Top 10-level game day coaching.

Until something changes, teams with equal or better talent than Mizzou will always have a coaching advantage to lean on in close games.

He gets beat by teams with clearly less talent. Props to him for having a top10-15 talented roster but look at MSU. They had 2 players. That was it.
