3 games in and this is one of the larger issues facing the team. What adjustments do the coaches make to ensure that we stop the run against Boston College?

We could test the opponents running backs or olines with those covid tests that are highly likely to give a false positive before the game.

Take a DB out and add another LB

Bring a hard hitting safety into the box to drop the hammer.

Press man in the passing game and bring another LB that can bring the lumber seems the only way.

Why not bring another D Line so the LBs can do their job easier?

The LB can help with both the run and pass D

Press man takes the corners out of supporting the run, Zone allows them to easier see and react to the run. Guys this is not a schematic issue, it is simply Jinmmys and Joes. We do not have run stuffing D-Linemen nor thumpers at LB.

Maybe our Oline needs to play two way ball so we actually have a 300 lb man on the line.

It’s really everything. Coach said it best the other day. There is no secret. The scheme is solid. It’s the execution and unfortunately the talent trying to execute it. The DL must be gap sound and at the very least occupy their blockers and keep them off the LBs. The LBs must be disciplined in their fits and make tackles. And the DBs must tackle better as well.

They know exactly what teams are going to do to us and Wilks is a smart coach. He knows HOW to stop it but it’s implementing the plan to the field which has been the issue

This is my opinion as well. Scheme can’t fix jimmy and Joe issues.

I have an idea... not saying its a good one, but its an idea. Considering our LBs also suck, lets just go 5 Dline, 1 LB and rest DBs

Well. We’d prolly have the speed to seal the edges. They’d likely get run over by RBs, but at least they’d be in position to trip them up.

Our D-Line is as bad or worse then our LB play at slowing the run

Triping them up gives our DBs time to get there and make the tackle. I mean our DBs are already making all the tackles but maybe now they could do it before the RBs get 7 yards down field.

IDK the size of the safeties, like whether they can take on big backs or not, but I suggested more DLine in hopes that it takes up more blockers hoping to get a man advantage.

4-3 is what we need to play. We just need to fill the gaps better and don’t worry bout the DE setting the edge. Let the OLB’s read the play and set the edge.

We don’t have the speed for 5-2 or 5-3. Don’t have the size for a 3-4. Bringing in another D lineman could also hurt the run D. Running a 5-2 against a good Oline is very risky. They could pull a guard allowing 1 man to block 2 of are guys on the line. This would make us very susceptible to the counter. It would also lead to short passes to the RB, screens, and QB runs.

If we used 5 down linemen they could bring in a jumbo set with 2 TE’s it leaves the middle open. This puts a safety on a TE and this leaves us susceptible to slants and the deep passes. They could empty the backfield and this would leave DB’s 1-on-1 with no safety help.

With the defensive players we have the front 4 should only worry about filling gaps.

In the 4-3 set we could also move the Sam inside and move the Mike outside to have speed on the outside and strength up the middle.

IMO, what we are seeing is strictly the result of years of poor LB recruiting.

We have been beyond BLESSED with LBs who have played well above their rating, Wilson, Spoon, Golden, Gooden, Garrett, Bolton. But we have suffered from underperformers, and poor depth.

This is our first year in 14 years that we don't have a breakthrough undervalued LB. Everyone is playing to their ability.

Drink will turn it around. I expect some processing and heavy focus on DL and LB for the 2023 class. He went hard after DBs, he got his QB and RB, and will probably get his premier WR. Can't fix everything at once.

My high school coach... " Run faster, tackle better."

He was a genius !
