I'd like to know who he thinks he's talking about. I could imagine a player or two...
quote:
Defensive tackle Josh Augusta said he thought West Virginia “just wanted to win more than we did.” Asked if he really meant that, Augusta said yes, calling it “a big problem.”
“We need to keep everybody on their feet,” Augusta said. “After a loss, people want to separate. (So) keep each other together, and just keep working. Keep working.”

More from the Sam Mellinger column...
MU gave up more yards and yards per play than any game last year, and more points than all but two.
The surprising thing — the problematic thing — was a defense that has to be great committing too many penalties, missing too many tackles, and a much-ballyhooed defensive line being controlled by an offensive line missing its starting left tackle and left guard.
This team has to win on defense. You can live with the offense needing time, and some good breaks, but Odom’s rookie season will be even worse than Gary Pinkel’s last season if the defense steps back after the defensive coordinator was promoted.
Mizzou managed no pressure on West Virginia. Opponents watching tape of this game will design longer developing pass plays to take advantage. It’s not just that Mizzou’s talented front seven didn’t make a sack — it didn’t come particularly close.

All of them outside of Penton, Chris Black and Alex Ross.

The most concerning thing is that we've purposefully neutered our defensive line. I don't think Shipp is stupid for wanting to play that way, a lot of teams do, but that was our identity and a big part of our success.
I just don't get changing the defense from what it was last year when it wasn't broke.
That was more concerning to me than the offense, but what really cost us the game was prior to the last TD we HS the ball in the redzone three times and managed 3 points. You'll never win like that.

Gutsy call on the 4th down call when a FG would have made it a 3 point game. Do you play in War Memorial Stadium this year?
Yes, indeed, though this year we aren't rolling the dice quite as much. Bringing in Alcorn State for that one.
Honestly, with as many new players as we started in different areas today it would have been much better to play an Alcorn State (who will now probably beat us to curse me) then a team like La.Tech. Just like it would have been good for Missouri to get their feet wet against someone with a bit less then WVU.
Still, big games to start the season are going to be common now.
Look at it this way. You lost to a team that should be hanging around the top 25 this year and could make a run into the top 15 and you did it right out of the gate on their home field. Its not like South Alabama came into your stadium and beat you.

Bingo.
It also looks to me like we'e taken a huge step back in S&C. Our guys yesterday looked heavy, sluggish and out of shape. I've heard Odom wanted the linemen to be bigger, but that can't come at the expense of speed and conditioning. They looked slow and played passive. That will kill us in conference play.
There's way too much talent on our DL to play that way. Shipp better fix this pronto.

Very wrong. When we First won the east we had an elite offense and finished ranked 5th in the nation

I think semo mentioned to me earlier about not jumping to super harsh conclusions. I am trying to take that advice as a casual fan who has never played D1 college football and trust the "process".
I was frustrated as well seeing our D lineman get manhanlded some plays, but I also tried to think about what I would do different. I know Barry Is a. great D- coordinator, so I can naturally assume he is not changing for the sake of change. I believe the change in philosophy was to play to our strengths in the back 7. Taking that read/pass option away from our secondary and putting the emphasis on our DL, which like you said in your post, many teams do.
I think if we have Brady on the other side and a healthy TBJ. Saturday looks different. Augusta against spread teams can't give is the snaps we need and in Conference play we may see his ability thrive. To me, this is directly related to talent. I was all in on a upset week one, but I see the issues BO is trying to address.
They did look a lil slow on D, not sure if that was S&C or what, because the O looked vastly improved in regards of separation and the ability to hold the point of attack on the O-Line:
I think we will be fine in a year or so. We really need to upgrade our resources and talent.

Man, I hope Odom is on Shipp's arse as we speak. Way too much talent on that DL to not be producing

I felt that way before I read some quotes from Shipp. Still do, to an extent. I think it will get better as we go. But, Shipp has definitely changed the philosophy. He was quote as saying they were learning a new "style of football" than they'd been playing. That "style" focuses on stopping the run first. But they aren't there yet. What I saw yesterday looks like they weren't successful at that, nor at stopping the pass. It's like they gave up what they do well to learn something new, and now aren't doing anything well at all. Many of these guys are veterans, and we saw last year what they are capable of producing. I think it's fair to say yesterday was a true disappointment, based on what I believe the talent to be.
They didn't look explosive yesterday, which I've come to expect from our D. On top of that, they looked much heavier, and sluggish. Prep for a move to a 3-4? Maybe. But we don't have the LB for that right now.
I try hard not to overreact. But yesterday really tempered my expectations for this season. Hope they can get it together and prove me wrong.

I'm not in panic mode. It was one game. A shitty game sure, but let's see how they react.
I'm not in panic mode because I don't expect much better than 4-6 wins and 4th-7th in the east. I was holding out hope and waiting to see what the product looked like on the field, but having seen a glimpse, I don't see this team finishing ahead of UGA/UF/UT. And yes, I know UT looked like dog shite too.

I'm to the point that I wish they'd let him go just so people would just shut the F up about it and stop bitching about it. New season. New things to bitch about.

The Day we will be accepted in the SEC is when we actually shoot for something higher then mediocre. No reason why MU shouldn't be a Top 15 program every year and winning National titles. Panic button has been hit bc that was embarrassing yesterday. We looked like an FCS team playing and FBS. We were manhandled most of the game. Time raise expectations around here. Example time Adam Dorrell was on the hot seat at Northwest for not making a National Title game after 2 yrs as the HC. He won it yr 3. Last years bearcat team was supposed to be rebuilding but they won it all. Time for higher expectations.

They're still kids in a lot of ways. And there were a lot of manipulative people leading them around. I'm willing to let bygones be bygones.

Those have all been purged, right? It's a shame the S&C program is suffering though.

Actually, there are a myriad of reasons.
It's one game, a game who are overreacting to btw. Also overstating the difference between the two teams.

How is WVU not a very good defensive team. We've actually been really good the past couple years. In fact if you compare WVUs numbers against Mizzous last year against comparable opponents WVUs was actually better than Mizzous sorry D. Mizzous numbers get boosted because they play horrible offenses...
