Drink’s first two years at Mizzou have been better than Pinkel’s

Pinkel’s first two years at Mizzou: 4-7 followed by 5-7, missed bowl eligibility both seasons. I remember a fair amount of frustration and even some murmurs about firing him at the time.

Drink’s first two years, in an arguably tougher situation: 5-5, 6-5 (so far), technically bowl eligible both seasons. Drink’s also doing more than Pinkel could have ever dreamed on the recruiting front.

Both guys came into situations following poor coaching tenures with pretty bare cupboards. This isn’t a shite on Pinkel thread, more a praise for Drink, I’m pretty optimistic about what he can do in Columbia.

Spot on EXCEPT (there's always an except huh ) I would say there's more of a "winning culture" now vs. when Pinkel took over; we've been to 2 SECCGs so there's more of an expectation if you will that we CAN win.

Yup, Pinker took over a losing culture were barely getting to a bowl game was a sign of success. Let's not forget that Barry's was 8-5 and 6-6 in his last two seasons. If you would said we'd get a coach producing those type of results in the 90's people would be thrilled.

Absolutely true, but the level of competition now is higher and Odom left us with the worst roster out of 14 schools save Vanderbilt. Not to discredit what Pinkel did for our football program, he had to fix years of neglect.

Odom wasn’t fired for his record. He was fired for the trajectory. And because he asked to be.

I think, as an outside observer, that Drink has been up and down his first two years at Missouri. That isn't a slight on him. But much like Arkansas when Pittman took over there was a serious talent deficiency.

The pieces to the puzzle were not on the field. Drink has had to go out and get them. Well, to his credit, he has been doing just that. You learn a lot more about a coach when he has to build a team up than when they walk into a steak and blowjob position.

More than half the teams in the Big 12 recruit badly. So Mizzous lack of talent wasn't as detrimental. In the SEC, Everyone recruits at a high level (excluding Vanderbilt), so blue chip players are a necessity to compete. Drinks ability to come in and recruit Missouri at a high level is the game changer over Pinkel IMHO.

Your post is pretty much spot on

What I liked this year, was Drinks willingness to make staff changes mid season.

Also the high-end recruits continue to buy into his vision. Especially the home talent.

I think we had been to 1 or 2 bowl games in the previous 18 years when Pinkel took over. I remember Pinkel later saying how they only had 2 scholarship cornerbacks, I think, when he took over.
They both had growing pains the first 2-4 years, things that made you wonder if they can forge upwards. Pinkel would never have been able to recruit like Drinkwitz, though.

However, not to disagree with my earlier post...Pinkel and his staff developed those 2 and 3 star kids. He was 1 game away from pulling off the impossible, playing for a Natty in the BCS era without top 10 recruiting.

True

Drink took over a better program though. Making bowls is expected at Mizzoi today

Pinkel had more experience going in, but MU had only 2 bowl appearances from 1984-2000

Odom, for all his faults, had Mizzou in 2 between 2016-2019

Don't get mad, you still have a shot at your first top 25 win on Friday.

Take off the rose colored glasses and you'd see what everyone else sees.

Dude has a good point!

Drink needs to beat a team that is decent or with a pulse. His recruiting looks nice on paper and so did the Vols and you see what they did with all those 4* players. LSU was and still is down last year and not much better this year.

Just like in basketball I'm starting to sour on CM, but I will give him to the end of the season.I'm tired of mediocrity!

Dude...don't start thinking that Arky is a blueblood!

Ever notice how the only fan base that doesn't claim a "down year" is Mizzou (and of course Vandy)

Before we came to the SEC, the mantra was the SEC just "reloads." Then when we get here and win some games, everyone is having a down season. Really just a bunch of bad programs who every 4 to 5 years manage to put it together. Like Wisconsin, Iowa or Purdue.

I appreciate this trolling post as it makes us bond together to respond “are you freaking insane?” to the idea that Drink is on the hot seat. He wouldn’t have been on the hotseat without bowling this year because of his recruiting. He has made some in game mistakes and we all question keeping Bazelak as the starter, but I love the guy. He has done so much, so soon to right our ship. I still think the Bazelak move is him walking a tightrope to keep both Macon and Cook from the transfer portal next year. A true chess master.

Springfield is much shittier, trust me. But they do have a better football coach.
