Stec's Mo St team sneaked by powerhouse (snicker) Chadron State 21-13. Then it's been 6 losses by scores of 63-7, 70-7, 56-28, 73-26, 38-2, and 40-10.

Known as a defensive genius, Stec's team has given up an average of 57 points in the losses.

Final 4 games look to result in 0-4 with games against good teams (S.Dak St, Youngstown, Northern Iowa, and N. Dak St.)

Just an example of a good, experienced coach who doesn't perform miracles in his first year...yet no one is calling for his head, yet.

(And, no, I'm not defending Kimbo with this...but...)

It's Stec's first year. Why stick it to KA or Stec?

Good job of putting two people down in one thread. Feel better? Please don't go to the level of Jagd.

Mule, you missed my point entirely. Just the opposite of what you state. I'm simply saying, let's not be surprised that a good coach taking over a mess...can struggle.

We know Stec is a good coach...but he can't do miracles in a single year (or two) with what he was given.

Same with Kim. I want him to do well...and I'm willing to give him a couple years...unlike some who are already calling for his head.

The CFB coaching ladder is the very definition of the Peter Principle.

Steckel is no different.

That's not a knock on him, but it's just the way it is for 85% of CFB head coaches.

People don't like Kim because Kim made zero effort to be in a position to get the job he got, and then his team sucked.

If HCKA was sitting on the sidelines, even as an assistant, at Wichita State, at Illinois, at any decent program and had a shite season he likely wouldn't get have the grief he does.

Let's relate it to baseball, where managers aren't even as hands on as basketball. The Tigers didn't hire an MLB bench coach or pitching coach as their manager. Hell, they didn't even hire the AAA manager from some other team.

They wen't down to some Single A affiliate and hired their manager because he won a championship at the single A level and played for the MLB club back when it won the division.

What do you mean he can't manage? He was a hell of a player and he won at the Single A level!

I hoped he'd come out with a great season his first year. I hope he turns it around this year, but that still wouldn't make the hire anything but a complete mistake that luckily turned solid.

Boom.

When he was hired, I made an analogy of giving the Porche keys to a dump truck driver and was told I was way too harsh. I hoped I'd be proven wrong. I still hope so. And I'm still waiting.

So you are comparing the hiring of KA to Matheny. A guy that had really put no effort into being in position to be considered for the job that he now has. We can only hope that the KA experiment works as well.

I purposefully avoided the Matheny comparison due to the fact that the Cards were coming off of a Championship and are pretty much a model organization. Mizzou was coming off a complete cluster of a previous hire and is certainly not a blueblood program.

I do hope it works out well, though. Like I said, it still doesn't make the hire make any more sense. When you've got a Cardinals type of operation you can take some pretty big risks.

I personally never liked Steckel's defenses and in the Big 12 they were terrible. Our defenses before we joined the SEC were the reason we lost games. I feel like he has benefited more than anyone from Coach K's ability to coach up DLine players.

I still have nightmares about the Navy and Auburn games. Simply inexcusable and I was happy to see him leave. Odom is 10x's the DC that Steck was.

That all might sound harsh, but go look at the stats of our defense before we joined the SEC.

I agree TC, appreciate his attitude and player relations, hated his schemes especially vs option teams.

Although I agree that Odom is better than Stec. Stec was a good DC. Of his last 5 years at Mizzou 4 times the defense was better than the offense, and that includes 2013.

He also took a bunch of GAs that did a big chunk of the coaching dirty work with him to MOState.

Which year(s) do you consider our defense terrible?

'09 was probably the worst, his first year, but still closer to average than bad. '10 defense was good. '11 took a step back but still above average.

'12, '13, and '14 were pretty good. IMO the defense caught up with the offense under Steckel.

Really? Because Odom just came in, has less talent, and is out performing all steck defenses ever, in year 1.

Less talent?
Harris, Augusta, TBJ, Brady, Newsone, Brothers, Penton will all probably make it to the NFL.

Harris is statistically outperforming what Ray did at this same point last year.

Odom is better, but Stec was a very good coordinator.

Disagree. 7 wins would and should bring any head coach at Mizzou grief.

Steckel's inability to ever adapt or change game plans was infuriating.

The defensive talent and specifically, Coack Kul's ability to develop DLine talent caught up to the offense. The schemes Mizzou used, specifically the CBs giving 10-15 yards of cushion on every play never gave me any confidence in our ability to stop plays when we needed to. We were the definition of "bend but don't break" defense, which is useful, unless of course you play an option team and you just bend all over the field.

No, I learned it from watching every Mizzou game since I was a Freshman in 2005.
