Can someone tell me why we are going to miss Lock?

I keep seeing that posted, but looking at his career stats against P5 competition I don’t see what we’ll be missing. He’s got a great arm but the facts are he’s pretty average against competent opposition.

I can think of 3 guys that will be bigger losses than Lock.

With any hope of the East being completely gone now, I wish we would start giving both Powell and Wilson 1 series a game.

I'm missing Pinkel too much to miss anyone else.

Because he’s better than what’s behind him.

He had two TDs dropped yesterday. He is a real shite bag.

Too bad Jon Gruden took the Raiders job. I'd love to see how a real professional quarterback evaluator would break down Lock's game. OMG, if Mike Martz could spend a month with him!

Someone brought it up in another thread, but Lock is often inaccurate within the catch radius by just a hair - slightly behind, low, etc. Can that be corrected through professional coaching or is the ability to throw accurately into tight windows what it is?

I also wonder about his current ability to see the entire feild. Many times when I'm specifically looking for that he seems locked in on on one receiver.

Lord knows it's hard to get an accurate read on him with three years of dropped balls and receivers unable to separate from above average and elite defenders, but there's a lot to like with Lock: arm talent, no fear within the pocket, coachable demeanor.

I agree with you though, as things currently stand Odom should be rotating in other quarterbacks if for no other reason than to provide a change of pace to spice things up on offense. That said, I'm sure he won't. It would require third level thinking.

The one on the goal line (to Johnson?) was behind him by a hair.

A great hands receiver could have made the catch, but Mizzou hasn't had one of those in years.

Is he?

I could post the numbers but we both know they aren’t good.

He has all the talent you could ask for, but he doesn’t play the position very well when there is a team with comparable talent lined up against him. These are facts.

That was a clear drop by Johnson, but the one to Okwuegbunam was a bad throw. “Could” have been caught of course but it was inaccurate and thrown too hard.

Although, nuke may be referring to the one to Knox which was pretty catchable.

In any event, the guy just seems to melt when not playing a team that we have way more talent than which won’t ever be the case in the NFL.

Completion % by year vs P5

48%
52%
53%
52%

That’s not good enough. Yes there have been drops

How often is he forced to make a pass into coverage because his receivers cannot get separation? How often does he feel the need to make the perfect pass because he does not trust the guy to make the catch?

We won't know how good or bad he is until he gets into the NFL and has quality receivers he can trust.

I don't look at it as we will miss Lock. We will always find someone new. I think the bigger concern for next year is we will be missing a veteran starter. Breaking in a new QB usually comes with bumps and bruises.

Just break them in by having them scrimmage against our defense. They'll feel like Aaron Rodgers.

Why has Lock been beyond criticism? He has been downright bad against SEC defenses this year. You have to be able to carry your team on your shoulders sometimes against a P5 team. He was dinking and dunking even before and after it started raining

Qb grade from SC game:
Quarterback: Yes, Emanuel Hall and Nate Brown were injured. Yes, the third quarter was played in a downpour. Drew Lock has excuses, but the fact remains he did not play well Saturday. Lock completed 17 of 36 passes, didn’t throw a touchdown and was intercepted twice. One of those interceptions, a screen pass intended for Tyler Badie that was picked off in the third quarter, has to rank among the worst decisions of Lock’s career. Worst of all, Lock struggled when it mattered most, finishing the game with zero completions on eight attempts in the red zone. This might have been his worst game since his freshman season. GRADE: F

I think next year could be a blessing in disguise. I personally feel the coaching staff is trying to highlight Drew Lock and his skill set even to the teams detriment. Lock should have only attempted 15-18 passes yesterday to be real. There were two 3rd and 6 or less calls where USC had 3 down lineman and 2 LB’s in the box where we had a TE attached with an advantage in numbers to run.

If we had a redshirt freshman in that spot I am positive we would have ran the ball at a 75/25 split, similar to the second and third quarters of 2014 with Mauk.

There's an illuminating point here: Many of our red zone plays indeed seemed to be called with the idea that Lock needs more TD passes to pad his resume.

You know what that is? Bad tactics. Bad game management. BAD COACHING.

Excellent point, Dooley forgot the main point of his job. To put the team in the best position to win. I hope this wasn't at BO's insistence. If it was, then he needs to go.
