Creative is somehow boring? The school nickname is the Tigers. So put an awesome looking Tiger on the helmet and be done with it. It's really not that complicated. A bland letter really isn't inspiring. I do like the helmets in the last two pictures.

Problem is this. Tiger head looks decent in twitter photos. Looks decent in TV closeups. From the stands, its's just a blob or some squiggly lines. From the stands, the M just stands out.

I knew someone would say something..
The 50 Most Instantly Recognizable College Football Helmets
via Bleacher Report
Mizzou’s black and gold is a deadly combo if I may so, but some aren’t fans of the team essentially stealing the Michigan Wolverines' block M on the helmet.

It doesn’t bother Minnesota, Memphis, Marshall or Miami of Ohio.
Also, Michigan doesn’t use the block M on their helmets.

I don't mind the oval tiger if they want to use it for branding and put it on media guides or tickets or merchandise. My own personal opinion is I prefer the block M on the helmets.
I think they tried the tiger to attract the younger generations. Traditions hold value too though.

There can be 2 logos. Arkansas uses 2. The hog and the hog head.

You saw into the future - Block M Helmets are back This time in white - are we gonna go on a Block M Helmet winning streak??

Bleacher report sucks. Someone else’s ignorance isn’t our problem. We should do whatever makes the largest group of our fans happy. The block M gold metallic plus variants are cool and at the same time classic. Michigan doesn’t wear an M on their helmets anyway. But Minnesota does and so does Maryland. I watched their game tonight. And the helmets for both have an M outlined by a yellow pretty close to Michigan’s color. Nobody cares. We shouldn’t either.

Gotta say. Those versions of the all whites look slick with the M. If we win again, roll the M back again.

Some of you guys are delusional, so I'll just back it up with better sources.
According to an article on STLtoday.com, the decision to make the change is partially based on the fact that the "M" is borderline indistinguishable from other school logos. More specifically, Coach Gary Pinkel said:
"...studies showed that MU's most distinct icons are the word 'Mizzou' and its Tiger-head logo. And nationally...the 'M' is easily confused with Michigan or others."

According to reality, college sports are very regional unless you have a bluelood program. SEC ppl will know what the "M" is and thats all that matters. The "M" and actual stripes on the helmet and pants is a much better fit for the "tradition" of SEC football.

So obviously I'm with Pinkel.. It's simply about being unique.
M stands for so much in college football, and for Pinkel, something didn’t feel right about the block M, the logo that had been used by the athletic department for years. It wasn’t “Missouri” enough. “We got Astroturf in our stadium right after I got here, and I went into Mike Alden’s office and I said ‘Mike, if you are asking me what I want to put in the middle, I do not want to put the M in. We’ve had this M forever.’ I said, ‘Mike, it’s not Missouri…and we’ve got to be who we are.’”
Pinkel thought the focus ought to be the Tiger, and he began to encourage creatives within the athletic department to brand the program accordingly. And splat! The tiger head was suddenly at midfield. New logos were rolled out, and the block M was eventually phased out.
Next Pinkel was inspired by his own kids, who had hung back in Toledo and wanted their pops to bring them back some Missouri athletic gear for Christmas. After Pinkel promised he would, later his son called back with a brazen qualifier: “Dad, just to let you know we don’t really want Missouri on it. We want Mizzou on it.” Wow.
That statement turned out to be a light bulb moment for Pinkel. So he went back the next day to Alden and said, “How do you figure this? Let’s call ourselves ‘Mizzou.’”
Perhaps Missouri had become rather blah. But Mizzou…that had a little pop to it. In Pinkel’s opinion, it was a unique nickname, something that connected people.
Finally after Pinkel had done all that, he began to brand the football field. “For us to build a winning program, we had to start winning home games,” Pinkel said in The 100-Yard Journey

Nice article and overview.
The only helmet logo I'm not a fan of is the most recent ink blot. The oval tiger and Block M are both sharp as hell, especially in gold flake.
As far as confusion with Michigan... Who'd be dumb enough to turn on the TV seeing Missouri vs. Georgia or whoever, with the team names and score on the screen, and somehow think Georgia's playing Michigan?
SEC football is the brand and if they want to go old school M to fit in so be it. Looks great.

In the Big 12 I 100% agree. The SEC is different. The "M" has a 40 yr legacy, that agrees more with SEC tradition. So Pinkel wasn't wrong because he was coaching a big 12 program at the time.

Interesting. I have never once thought that.

Nobody in the SEC gives a shite about Mizzou's "M" block from the Big 12, Big 8 days except maybe Texas A&M.

All the Rantards on here love the Block M Zou has sported the last two years. You’re fighting a hilariously stupid battle over and over again.

if only we still had the block M in the north end zone
