a little over 2 years ago, we basically hired the Memphis DC to be our head coach

Let that sink in

How much do you value Odom's one year of experience as a DC at a P5 school under Pinkel?
Posted on 10/8/18 at 3:34 pm to TigerTalker16
Enough to recognize the fact that he wasn’t the Memphis DC?

You are really hating BO as head coach aren't you?

We’re going to be a very average team in the scheme of things. Which is going to translate to a bottom third finish in the SEC East.
Then we’ll likely be about the same to a little worse next year.
Then we have to hope that we land some great recruits on defense and that they start to develop quickly for the following year.
Where are we supposed to be better? Four years from now?
Is that the exciting part of the process?

Once again the bandwagon clumsily lurchs into motion.

OK fair enough but what does this team look like without the 3 mistakes against UGA, who is the number 2 team in the country. And what about the Johnson drop, missed field goal and Crockett stupidity that cost Mizzou the USCe game. Can we honestly lay those "On Field" mistakes on BO? It's not like he's coaching them to go screw up the games.

Georgia still wins that game comfortably even if we don’t have those glaring mistakes. They pretty much shut it down and just did enough to win. But it would’ve been nice to have not looked like a junior high team.
Playing the what if game, we could also have easily lost to Purdue. And we would be 2-3.
We aren’t making stupid mistakes once or twice a year. We are making mind-numbingly stupid mistakes almost every quarter. That eventually is on the coach. If the mistakes were more limited in scope or frequency, it would be a more appropriate conversation to have about the role of player versus coach.

First lets be clear, I am NO BO apologist. But I do see progress.
1. Despite recruiting rankings, we don't seem outclassed on the field.
2. St. Louis recruiting
3. Forgetting that Dooley was trying to pad Lock's stats, he has had an effective offense.
At least Bo seems to have narrowed down his problems to individual player in game mistakes. It's not scheme or talent or effort. His next hurdle, play clean.
Are we sure the best cause of action is to start over?

I’ve already said that I think Mizzou wins enough this season that BO is back. We are a now culture that’s struggles with the process of being in between really bad and good.
Right now Mizzou is an average team and BO is an average coach. I think he works through that and ends up being above average to really good. What I’m not sure about is will Mizzou fans give him the time to grow as a coach.

This week (Oct. 11th, 2003) marks Gary Pinkel's first signature win over #10 Nebraska 41-24.
Year Three, Game Six. When do you see Odom's first signature win coming?

Pinkel had the benefit of 10 years at a mid major. In his first 3 seasons at Toledo Pinkel went 17-15-1. That was after Toledo went 10-2 under Saban the previous year. Pinkel also almost completely turned his coaching staff over. It also wasn’t until after year 5 at both Toledo and Mizzou that his program took off.
Similar could be said about Mark Stoops at Kentucky. This is year 6 after basically being a .500 team under Stoops.
I still expect Mizzou to get to the 7 or 8 win mark this season, which should bring him back next season. If Mizzou doesn’t win that many then I will have been wrong and Odom is likely no longer the coach here.

It is unlikely to be this year. I, too, think he will win enough games to get year four. He’s not learning anything, however.

I’m not sure about this.

No one who matters is sure that’s the best course of action. The fact that we have to ask this question every year is not a strong factor in his favor.

The signature win could be Kentucky. It’s a good matchup for Mizzou and they will likely finish the year as a top 20 team similar to that Nebraska team in 2003.

It is a good matchup for us. I have zero confidence in our ability to negotiate a win against them. They’re a far better team than S. Carolina.

Yes. On BO. Especially the lack of discipline this team shows.

Well, with Purdue at 2-3 and Wyoming at 2-4, I'll take a win over a bowl eligible team. We don't even have that under BO if I'm not mistaken.

Vandy and Arkansas were both bowl eligible in 2016.
Eastern Michigan as well.
