So Graves Pearl and Ferguson aren’t making it onto campus?

Pearl and Ferguson both needed a year in the gun club. This sucks in terms of their development.

DE is still a big question mark going into this season

Arkansas was expecting Sci Martin to be theirs. Not a bad pickup.

I don't think he is a bad get either. He played in 5 games a true FR for LSU and had offers from 12 P5 schools. At 20 he should be physically ready for the edge.

Would have been nice to have Graves opposite Martin next year. My impression is that Odom's squad seems to have a more fearless approach than Pinkels.

It's too bad Graves doesn't like hitting the books. He would make what I think is going to be a good front 4 even better.

I'm so confused how a parent(s) raises a 6'4" 230lb child who excels at football, yet doesn't make sure their academics are in order. It's not like the minimum qualifications are terribly high. Just takes a little commitment. Graves, Fergusen, how does it happen?
Posted on 2/7/19 at 3:26 pm to surgicalvenom
All Graves had to do was graduate from JUCO and he couldn’t even do that

Ok, so your son has talent, but has to go JUCO because of academics. How is this not a daily conversation with your son? So he pisses away 2 opportunities because he refuses to use his god given brain to reach minimum standards, which are only slightly more difficult than fogging a mirror.

At the end of the day, the player has to want it bad enough to make the sacrifices necessary to make sure they have a spot at the table.
Posted on 2/7/19 at 7:44 pm to navynuke
I'm not sure I would even know how to not graduate from JUCO.

Much like high school you almost have to try harder to fail than you do to pass.
After watching Last Chance U and that Brittany lady working with those doods, it’s not surprising that some kids still don’t qualify.

I don’t think it is just about graduating. I believe it is also about keeping a certain GPA.
My wife is a professor at Missouri Southern. After Missouri Southern hired a new coach(Simms) she wanted to watch Last Chance U, because he was in season 3. She was surprised that many of the things in the show she has seen or see every semester.
She has been a professor for over 10 years. She has had students that don’t miss classes and turn in all assignments and barely or don’t make a “C”. Missouri Southern is much like a lot of JuCo because you don’t need to take the ACT or have a certain high school GPA.
With some students she believes they can’t or don’t have the capacity to pass classes with a “C” or better.
We can sit back and judge, but some kids just can’t pass classes with good enough grades for different reasons.
I know I couldn’t make it through Med school no matter how hard I would try. Just like some of these kids can’t pass a regular classes in at a JuCo.

Reminds me of a few years back, a nearby JuCo had a 7-foot basketball player with, according to the coach, "a huge upside."
He played some in December, then was gone at the start of the second semester in January.
I asked the coach why. He said they found out the kid could not read or write...at all! Could just print his name. He came from North Carolina. Don't know what happened to him after that.
The brightest tutor wasn't gonna keep him eligible.

JUCO kids only have to graduate to be eligible for D1 schools. Now some schools have different admission standards and the SEC has an odd math requirement, but as far as the NCAA goes they just have to graduate

What bothers me about these situations is that when a child shows athletic talent (especially in urban settings), too little effort is devoted to the required academics in order to reach the athletic goal. And then without the athletic opportunity, what's his future?
I coach baseball so I don't see it much among my players, but my brother volunteers for MOKAN, and he sees it over and over. with all the resources available, especially to lower income families, there is no reason to not be prepared to pass minimum requirements.
I used to hate it when young black kids told me they wanted to grow up to be professional athletes. Now I hate how whole families want the kid to be an athlete, but no one steps up to prepare him academically.
