Honestly leadoff has historically been the only spot Carpenter can actually hit in. I have no idea why but he's always hit massively better at leadoff than in the 3 spot.

Fowler wasn’t a trade. Anyone know why Reyes was pulled early? How much longer is Lyons going to keep getting hammered before someone else gets the call?

Your right about Fowler. I meant it was a bad signing.

Reyes has a lat strain. Depending on how bad it is he could be out for the season. A bad lat strain could take up to 100 days to recover. If surgery is needed it could be up to 150 days or more.

It usually happens when a pitcher has a high stress inning(Reyes 2nd) and then comes back and continues to pitch.

It very rarely happens to pitchers that pitch at a lower velocity. That’s why it almost never happens to high school or college pitchers.

Lyons is the guy unless the cards make a trade

Its a good trade if we ever make it to the playoffs. We got him because we needed a veteran and a clubhouse guy. He was actually pretty good last year, just sucked he was injured as much as he was. He's actually starting to turn it around a tad bit, and after his walkoff against the cubs a few weeks ago, I'll never dislike him.

His pitch count way decently high, and we had a guy on 3rd with one out when reyes came up to bat. At that time it looked like whoever scored first would win. Im ok with the PH, unfortunately it didnt work out.

Ideally when reyes comes back, weaver becomes the new lyons.

What a buzzkill Reyes has a serious arm/shoulder strain. Martinez had a minor strain, and he’s been out 3 weeks now. So it’s likely Reyes will miss most of the season and possibly all of it. So that solves the issue with him, Flaherty, and Weaver fighting for 2 rotation spots. Last night sure was a fun ending after the bullpen caved in again.

Or he becomes part of a trade for a legit bat. It's gonna cost something to get something and if you have to give up a young pitcher and if you're talking between Reyes, Flaherty and Weaver, I'd just as soon it be Weaver, though Reyes' inability to ever stay on the mound is making me wonder if we shouldn't be trading him while he has value.

Welp...

@thepainguy: Hearing rumors Alex Reyes' injury is serious and perhaps career-threatening.

Sadly plausible.

P.S. Thus the second opinion, which suggests a complicated procedure.

There has only been one lat surgery in MLB history.

Jake Peavy in 2010, performed by the same doctor Reyes is seeing tomorrow.

quote:

"The best pitchers on the planet use their lats the most," said Eric Cressey of Cressey Performance in Hudson, Mass. "They use big muscles to do big jobs."

Cressey also noted that the lat connects the lower body to the upper body to allow for force transfer that ultimately leads to arm speed and ball velocity.

Heard this on radio today. His career may very well be over. Very sad.

Had surgery today, done for the year.

quote:

@jmjones: #stlcards GM Michael Girsch says Dr. Romeo confirmed a significant lat strain and some fraying between the tendon and the bone. He had surgery to reattach the tendon to the bone. Recovery time is six months before he’s on the mound throwing.

Crazy to think how an injury that significant happened out of nowhere to someone that young who hasn’t even pitched much this year.

THAT does not sound good for Reyes’ pitching future.

Reyes will probably be in the bullpen when he comes back. He could be really good closer with his offspeed pitches to go along with his fastball.

The organization has tried to go slow and build up his strength to become a starter.

They should allow him to learn and build up the strength in the minors to become a every other day bullpen guy and eventually a closer.

The Cardinals should treat him like the Braves did with Smoltz. The Braves used Smoltz as a reliever for 4 years and he had around 150 saves before he came back to be a starter.

Reyes has the potential to be a dominant bullpen guy. They should allow him a long stint in minors in 2019 and bring him back after the 19 all-star break.

HE hasn’t way too much talent and too many good pitches to be a BP guy until they are 100% convinced he can’t hold up to being a starter.
No reason to stunt the growth.
