am curious though.. now.. anyone heard of ANY changes Odom might be making?
I guess there are a couple of grad asst. spots open right? All I know is NEVER hire a Nub for a grad asst spot.

I would be happy to get Jacobs and Howard instead. More upside I think. Anyways NU has to throw everything at the Davis twins, because the 6'7" DE recruit from Omaha, is backing out and looking hard at Oregon. So losing the Davis twins would be devastating for the program especially considering their already lack of depth on the DL.
Posted on 1/5/15 at 12:25 pm to reedus23
What I'm hearing about the Davis twins is that one wants to go to Mizzou, and one still for the Nubs.
The tiebreaker seems to be the parents. Mom's bro was a DB at Nebraska. Everything seems to be pointing to them stuck on the Nubs.
The parents also want them to stay together.
I thought we had a pretty good shot, but today I have to put our odds at 40% tops, drinking lots of kool-aid.

Saleem Brightwell eliminated Mizzou today, he's the 3* LB from NJ who visited in December. Named a top 3 of Miami, Pitt, and Michigan State.

Thought we had a good shot at him. We keep winning, but this shite doesn't change.

Well, Steckel was his lead recruiter, he told Rivals it was the reason he eliminated us. It makes sense, we're also hard after Sapp, David Long, and Hockaday, who's an Iowa commit.
Prevost might be getting back into it with Mizzou too.

Getting tired of it, our luck is going to run out with all these 2 and 3 stars, in fact it almost did, there were signs of it in 2011 and 2012, I know there were injuries but the talent level went down pretty hard regardless due to horrible recruiting classes those years. The 3 stars are ok if you throw in about 5 or 6 4 stars a year. Eventually this will not cut it once Tennessee and Florida turn things around. The 2011 and 2012 recruiting classes will start coming home to roost.

I'm not even worried as much about UT and UF getting back on track. My concern is I'd like to see the recruiting increased before GP retires. I'm afraid that the next staff won't be as good at turning 2 or 3*'s into stars and will need more 3, 4 and 5* players in order to compete. That foundation and that level has to be established before GP retires is my concern.

quote:of course we all would, I know this is a "small" class and that makes a difference, even if we land Beckner Jr and the Davis bros, we still probably can't break 25 on most recruitment class lists. But that would still represent the best "star" class Pinkel has ever landed.

This is why GP is right in regard to getting the south end stadium complex launched now, wither it's in time to help him or only the next guy, it's an important key to the recruiting "arms race".

Certainly a concern, but the next step is moving up in recruiting, and if Oregon can do it, I see no reason we can't as well.

I know we wish we had gotten hentges and ofodile this year, and Elliot and Roderick Johnson in past years but this is the best class we've ever had. We are making progress like Oregon did- one year at a time. If you look at the quality of our class we are ranked near 20. In the big 12 we never came close.
I usually complain about the recruiting but can't this year. We'll get more in states in the next few years and in the next 3 or 4 years, I think we will make the top 10.

Is it not pretty clear at this point that it isn't luck?
Id like to recruit better, but to think we just stumbled into this success is way off base IMO.

I hear ya. I really like this class so far. I'm also wondering if the sleeper in this class could be Warren, DB out of Georgia. There was a thread on the recruiting board earlier about if you could take one player from each school's class who would it be. A couple Bama fans said Warren.
I will absolutely love this class if we can get Beckner. Davis or Jacobs or whomever would just be icing on the cake.

If the twins keep messing around, Mizzou may take care of it themselves. All it will take is a recruit coming in and taking a spot and that'll be it. End of the Twins and Mizzou right there. It may be Howard. He may see the writing on the wall as this may be his shot so he's taking it with an OV. Strange that he had no interest in Mizzou a week ago and now they are back on the radar.
I would love to see a couple of my hometown boys playing at Mizzou. But haste is waste. Gotta shite or get off the pot and make a decision. But if Howard were to come in here with Beck jr. and take two spots, wouldn't that leave the twins out in the cold? Or would Mizzou make room if they committed?

Just stop. The recruiting will not increase ever under Pinkel. He does not use the star system that those services use so asking him to get better ranked players is pointless. So is trying to justify the players he gets and comparing them to their rankings.
He is not going to land players like those at Tenn. for 2 reasons. 1 his mantra is Mizzou Made and very few star players are going to buy into that, after all they have been told all their life that they are destined for greatness, they don't need to improve. 2 he prefers to let experienced older players on the field and star players do not want to ever redshirt (even if beneficial) because being talented is more important than experience. They have dominated in. HS so surely they are ready for immediate playing time.
New coaches at schools have to promise playing time to get star players. Coaches at name schools promote history to land players. As long as he keeps winning, Pinkel has zero reason to try and change his recruiting style. I would suggest that Mizzou is getting quite a boost in recruiting talent, but as fans we don't see it because we only have recruiting sites to tell us how good a kid is. It was just last Feb. that Pinkel said the class coming in was his best ever.
Having said all that, I still want more stars!!!!

Some of the kids from 2011:
Shane Ray
Conner McGovern
Kentrell Brothers
Ian Simon
Taylor Chappell
Brad McNulty
David Johnson
Clarence Green
And some kid named Sheldon Richardson
Some of the kids from 2012:
DGB
Harold Brantley
Russell Hansbrough
Evan Boem
Sean Culkin
Maty Mauk
Michael Sherer
Donavin Newsome
Marcus Golden
Rickey Hatley
John Gibson
Morgan Steward.
Horrible. We'll be paying the price for those classes soon-oh wait, we just did, as in almost all of these kids played major roles in two straight SECe titles and two straight New Year's day bowl wins.

It just goes to show how long and arduous the process is to become an elite program.
I've thought about starting a thread on the Rant asking that very question - How long does it take to build or destroy an elite program? And then secondarily, what are the most important criteria to becoming an elite program? Facilities? Top notch recruiters? A big time sugar daddy like Phil Knight?
Specifically, I look at Oregon and how long it took them to get to this point - about 20 years - in a strictly imported talent program. And conversely, Tennessee has been in the crapper for 10 and can still pull Top 5-10 classes despite being in a non-talent rich state.
Oregon started turning it around under Rich Brooks in 1994, then continued under Bellotti from 95-2008, before ultimately hitting the top level under Chip Kelly starting in 2009.
Missouri is what? About 8 years into winning at a consistent 9-10 win level? So what does it take to get it over the hump? I think reedus and Jagd are right that the next level (if it comes) will come from Pinkel's successor. It's not what we want to hear, but it's probably the truth - and that doesn't really bother me. I'm enjoying the up ride on the escalator. But the next hire will likely make or break the momentum Pinkel's built.
So do you think a Rant thread asking these questions would gain any traction? Or would it get killed / buried?

I think you make room. DLine is about as thin as WR. Need numbers.

Oh but he does. I know he doesn't write it himself, but go read Blaine Gabbert's bio and tell me they don't look at them.

I don't think you can use the player's bios to claim GP pays any attention to the star rankings. Just because the sports information dept. digs up whatever glowing thing they can find to make the kid look as good as they can to the fans doesn't indicate to me whatsoever that the staff pays attention to that when recruiting.
