“On August 21, 1863, Capt. William C. Quantrill led a band of Missouri partisan rangers on a daring raid of Lawrence, kansas. The raiders sought vengeance for murders and other terrorist acts that had been committed by Jayhawkers and Redlegs, including the looting and burning of numerous Missouri farms and the town of Osceola. Even then, Lawrence was the nest of Jayhawker activity. And it was Lawrence that burned that day."
Between three and four hundred riders arrived at the summit of Mount Oread, then descended on Lawrence in a fury. Over four hours, the raiders pillaged and set fire to the town and killed most of its male population. Quantrill's men burned to the ground a quarter of the buildings in Lawrence, including all but two businesses. They looted most of the banks and stores and killed between 185 and 200 men and boys. According to an 1897 account, among the dead were 18 of 23 unmustered army recruits. By 9 a.m., the raiders were on their way out of town, evading the few units that came in pursuit, and splitting up so as to avoid Union pursuit of a unified column.
The Lawrence Massacre was one of the bloodiest events in the whole history of kansas.

You beat me to it!!
I read that starting early tomorrow, you can follow along on the KC Star's twitter feed as they recap the raid on a timeline.
One of the main reasons Lawrence was picked, despite their cries that the evil, murderous Missourians just went after that poor, innocent town for no good reason, is that Lawrence was the home of Senator James Lane. Lane was the leader of the Jayhawkers, and had personally led the raid 2 years earlier on Osceola that left that town in ruins and 3,000 people homeless. Those Jayhawkers took back all kinds of loot with them to Lawrence, including livestock, household goods, money, jewelry and even a piano. Lawrence had warehouses full of stolen goods from Missouri.
Quantrill's men had a list of Jayhawkers they wanted to find, and kill, that day; Lane's name was at the top of the list. They went to his home, but he was not there. He had escaped out the back door and hidden in a cornfield like the coward he was. Other prominent Jayhawkers were also on those lists - some managed to escape.
Numerous articles and even books have been written about this raid. It's fascinating stuff.

I love Ride with the Devil because it was filmed by the man who made my all time favorite movie, Brokeback Mountain.

I believe this is when Quantrill said, "Raise the black flag and ride hard, boys. Our cause is just, and our enemies many."

Ok you hate Toby McGuire but to not watch that movie, Which is excellent is a crime, please tell me you have seen it. Ang Lee is an excellent director as well only really disliked his version of Hulk.

The battle reenactment is live tweeting. And it's trending. Pretty interesting stuff, actually.

William Quantrill
@WQuantrill1863: (bloodlust rising - shooting anyone who moves - rebel yells and curses) #QR1863
ETA: hopefully they reenact Jim Lane's insanity and self inflicted gunshot over the next year or so.

I think Ang Lee subtly implies in Ride with the Devil that Quantrill's men slept together in tents and kept warm by spooning.
In fact, that well known rumor is the reason why he decided to film Brokeback Mountain.
