Since I live out of state by miles, south Florida, my news reporting regarding state is lousy. But what I do see, it appears that Ole Miss is getting the better end of the stick in recruiting vs. us. Am I seeing this correctly?

I am seeing MSU at 35 and Ole Miss at 53 right now. Doesn't look like either of us are lighting the world on fire.

Per 247
State - 15 total commits, 2 four-star, 13 three-star
Ole Miss - 10 total commits, 6 four-star, 3 three-star, 1 unrated

It's two different philosophies in recruiting.

Mississippi State is going after high school guys with the athleticism to play even if they don't have the rating.

For instance. There are 3 DB's that are committed all rated 3 star but all have the measureables to play in the SEC and even the NFL. So why aren't they rated higher? Mostly, they are playing out of position in HS.

They simply cannot be rated any higher without game tape but anyone that saw them at camp, offered them. I am not saying ratings don't matter, just that they don't always mean a guy can't become a great player. If they don't develop, then hit the portal but the key is they have the size, speed etc and have the ceiling.

OM is only taking guys that can play now which mostly eliminates about half the state of Mississippi. Then hitting the portal hard.

Both will field similar talent on the field.

I really like the QB, WR and OL recruiting that State is doing these days.

I will go on to say that in these smaller schools in MS, the best athlete is playing QB but they are not college level QB's. Many won't even be rated at anything other than ATH and no way they get a 4 star rating. A 3 star is actually a compliment for a dude that has no tape.

Then a lot of small schools have horrible strength and conditioning programs and don't even get me started on their nutrition level.

Then the level of coaching in these places have been mediocre at best. Coaches clinics at major programs help them but they don't come out of college prepared to be good coaches.

But some of these guys have upsides as good as any 4 star out there.

Mississippi State has done it this way ever since I started following recruiting.

Look at these three lowes rated players in State's class

All are big DB's one ran a 4.4 over 6 feet and about 200lbs and all dominated at camps.

If these guys end up in State's secondary, it will be pretty good.

Plus, they are on a couple more that are rated highly. Then the portal...

State is getting enough talent to hang with most teams.

They are not top ten level but Mississippi State is the poorest team in the SEC.

Recruiting is actually more complete than I have ever seen. Why? They can fill holes with the portal.

The problem? I don't see any sure fire first rounders like Chris Jones or Jeffrey Simmons. If it is one, it will be at the QB position or one of these HS guys playing out of position.

But I do see a roster full of potential to get in the NFL.

Recruiting rankings in August don't mean much as classes aren't complete. Ole Miss is in the top 25 in average recruit ranking but I suspect we only take about 10 more so I doubt we finish top 20.
