Maybe it's just wishful thinking, but I keep seeing Nick Saban in a Dolphins polo talking about how he's not going to be the coach at Alabama.

Damn. I just bought my ticket for the Rich Bisaccia train.

He addressed his team on Sunday, however, the Kornblut report came out today.

Okay, now I'm a little concerned. The next video on that Twitter account is telling recruits what they're saying on the Internet is false.

He can't come out and say anything until it's official. He has to keep his guys focused on the next few games, and if he said one thing to them and another to recruits, it wouldn't make sense. Not saying he is definitely coming here, but he isn't going to say much until the actual meeting with Tanner and offer has been done.

Here's a look at some $ numbers. I've been reading things today about going up to $10M to put the staff together, but I think that number (if true) really is about the whole staff, not just the HC and Asst Coaches.
Here's our current Football Operations staff, and their salaries.
Spurrier - Former HC ($4M)
Shawn Elliott - Interim Head Coach ($325K)
Deke Adams - Defensive Line ($320K)
Kirk Botkin - Linebackers ($320K)
Jon Hoke - Co-Defensive Coordinator/Defensive Backs ($750K)
G.A. Mangus - Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks/Tight Ends ($300K)
Joe Robinson - Special Teams Coordinator ($350K)
Everette Sands - Running Backs ($250K)
Steve Spurrier Jr. - Wide Receivers/Recruiting Coordinator ($380K)
Lorenzo Ward - Co-Defensive Coordinator ($750K)
Travelle Wharton - Offensive Line ($60K)
Jamie Speronis - Associate AD/Football Operations ($185K)
Joey Blake - Director of Football Nutritio ($70K)
Joe Connolly - Director-Football Strength & Conditioning ($225K)
Robbie Liles - Director - Recruiting Operations ($120K)
Patrick Shine - Administrative Coordinator - Recruiting ($50K)
Scott Spurrier - Quality Control Coordinator (Offense) ($61K)
Grady Brown - Quality Control Coordinator (Defense) ($270K)
Shaq Wilson - Quality Control Coordinator (Defense) ($61K)
Brian Turk - Quality Control Coordinator (Special Teams) ($60K)
We spent $8,907,000 this year on coaches and support staff. $10M would be a big increase. We could replace Grady in the budget with 4 more QC's. The need to add $ to recruiting personnel as well.

We'll have one DC and I suspect he'll be got for around a million if we get the right guy.
That'll save us half a million.
Grady's money will be split among a couple of other QCs but not all of it ... we're looking to save as much money as possible while still upgrading the entire staff.
Herman will have OC duties even though he'll name an OC I'm sure ... or not. He's going to bring Major Applewhite with him I would think ... unless Major gets a better offer elsewhere.
Let's remember, depending upon how Houston handles this, someone may be promoted from within his current staff and that person may elect to try to keep as many of the current staff in place as possible. So the ones we want, we're going to have to throw money at them.
Jamie Speronis' sorry as is gone ... he's already cleaned-out his office and good riddance. Not sure if Herman will bring the Fernando Lovo guy with him, or not. But typically those guys make less money than Speronis' sorry arse was making.
Here is a good read on his current staff, their pedigree to some degree along with how much they currently make.

ETA: As I understand it, Orlando is not coming to SCAR alongside Herman but, I suppose, that is subject to change if a better candidate is not available.

The three highest-paid assistants on Herman's staff are defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Todd Orlando ($501,000), offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Major Applewhite ($301,000) and co-defensive coordinator/assistant head coach/safeties coach Craig Naivar ($301,000). Orlando is the highest-paid assistant at a non-Power 5 school.
The remaining six assistants' annual salaries range from $116,000 to $205,000.
If you factor in the salaries for strength and conditioning coach, director of football operations, and quality control/graduate assistant staffers, the salary pool is $2.645 million.
Herman, who was hired on Dec. 16, received a five-year deal worth $6.75 million that includes an annual salary of $1.35 million, the most for a football coach in school history.

I could be interested in Orlando. He had really good defenses at Utah State, and currently at Houston they're:
25th in Sacks, 11th in Rush Defense, 2nd in Turnovers Gained, and 23rd in Scoring Defense.
Orlando is worth a interview, but I get the feeling he won't be a great recruiter. He recruited PA for UConn up until he took the Utah St job. He's not very active on social media though. I think he's a 'walk the walk' kind of guy. If he's the DC, we need a stud recruiting DB coach and DL coach.

Seems Herman isn't coming here after all. When it rains it pours.

Came to say the same thing...both Chris and Scott low are saying he is a long shot now. Media leaks may have spooked him. He wasn't too thrilled last off-season when him to Houston was leaked.

Isn't this a blessing in disguise though?
Say that Herman went USC or even Mizzou, and next year Strong gets fired. The guy is gone, he's wearing burnt orange the minute the job opens and an offer comes. Texas has the money to pay even the most ridiculous buyout.
I think Fedora would be a better hire for both programs.

It's too early to say that. They were talking on 247 about how he was spooked by it, but he hasn't removed his name from consideration. He's got to coach against Navy and then possibly the AACCG, If he's not here the week after that, then he's not coming, but nobody should jump ship just yet.

Yeahhhh...cause hiring the coach of one of the THREE teams we beat this year really inspires buttloads of confidence in me.

I just want everyone to STFU with throwing rumors around. Some nobody who was looking to get his name out there as a credible source so his Twitter followers could get a boost probably just screwed our chances with Herman.
Who knows if there was even a deal in place, but coaches and players check Twitter, and when there is a nonstop chatter about something that may not even be true, it tends to change people's minds.
If there was a deal in place, Tanner knows to keep his mouth shut, and now he will make sure that everyone involved will shut up too. Anything that comes out between now and the official announcement will just be BS. The possibility of a mere rumor ruining something he has focused on and put a lot of energy into for a while will ensure that from now on, only the most knowledgeable and trusted people will get info on the search. That's it.
Also, more people need to realize that sites like 247 sometimes just take things and run with them. They have to produce content, and if we've learned anything from the Seventh Woods (and to a degree, the Muschamp) debacles, it's that taking this info at face value is dumb.

Before anyone says anything further about Tom Herman, just remember this type of situation is all smoke and mirrors at this stage. Everyone we want is still coaching, people are going to say a lot of things, there will be information and misinformation released by 'sources.'
There are known knowns. These are things we know that we know. There are known unknowns. That is to say, there are things that we know we don't know. But there are also unknown unknowns. There are things we don't know we don't know.
Bottom line is: we are going to get one of our top choices, it will be a good hire.

No because who is to say Texas would even want to hire Herman?
That said I'm fine with Kirby Smart. Especially if he can bring in some of the staff that is speculated he can. Particularly Shane Beamer.

Well damn ... it's Kirby Smart.
Who knows what happened or why. Doesn't matter now. Speculation on why is probably not important - could very-well be LSU is in play and, if that's so, it would make total sense for him to take the LSU job. Perfect sense, but who knows.
Things usually work-out for the best.
ETA: FWIW I got in from the deer stand about two hours ago and this was the first I had heard of it. Had some calls waiting, a few texts. General consensus, after talking here and there since, is that the Citadel loss was what changed his mind ... not wanting to inherit the shite show I guess. Maybe it was that and LSU combined - who the hell really knows. It's over and done with now.
This might very well cost us a couple more recruits. I hope Kirby Smart has a helluvan OC in mind. I imagine this will be good news for Joe Rob also.
