We've GOT to have someone this cycle who can spin it. Not only do we need another QB from a depth stand point, we need someone who's going to push Joyner to progress after Bentley leaves.

Which is where Dan Werner comes in.

Is Dan Werner another Kurt Roper?

Coach Muschamp said that if he had Roper as his OC from the beginning of his career at UF, then he would have been successful as a Head Coach.

Everyone knows than if Roper knew how to adjust before halftime then he could not have understand how to game plan opponents.

What he meant by that was that, with the talent and defenses he had at Florida, Roper would have definitely been just fine.

They would not have needed a high powered offense ... just steady QBs and an offense that didn't lose them games.

Roper would have been fine for that at Florida. Very conservative.

Here at SC and given how fast the game is changing we have got to go super fast up tempo, keeping defenses off balance and guessing.

Roper was not good at that nor was he good at adjusting offenses to fit his talent.

Werner knows how to make the most out of what he's got as he has proven time and time again and all his ex-QBs have testified-to.

Connor Shaw told me last year while we were eating in the Cockaboose ... Roper is a good QB coach when it comes to the mechanics. But I noted at the time he did not endorse him as an OC. He was very evasive on that point.

Werner is not the OC ... he's the QB Whisperer. B-Mac and he will make a good pair, I really believe that.

You’re right, Roper could not adjust his game plan as an OC. By the time he made his adjustments it was too late.

Connor Shaw is a true leader and I hope he comes back to Columbia in the future.

One of my favorite coaches during my days at Furman’s Summer Camp was Coach Hendrix and I fully trust his character in bringing in Coach Shaw this year as a tight ends coach.

I have high expectations for Dan Werner as our QB Coach this year but I have to question our HC when it comes to offensive hires.

Does anyone think any of these QBs are in play for 2019? 247 says we offered Conover, but doesn't say when.

Davis Beville 6'5"/200lbs Greenville, SC

Jacob Conover 6'0"/190lbs Chandler, AZ

Stone Norton 6'3"/190lbs Nashville, TN

Johnathan Bennett 6'1"/185lbs Summerville, SC

Out of all of these, I'm kind of partial to Beville from Greenville. Reminds me of Nick Fitzgerald a little bit.

You know ... the height issue. It's the unspoken gorilla in the room.

I kinda lean towards taller QBs but then there is Connor Shaw, Russell Wilson, Aaron Rogers, et al.

I just don't know anymore. I mean sure, everyone wants a 6'5" guy that can run like Cam Newton but those are few and far between and I heard this morning that the kid at Louisville is being told by NFL scouts that he's a WR.

I will think there is something to be said for a 6'1"ish QB that can make things happen in college ball with his feet.

Of course, I'll post this again but Jay Urich is going to surprise some fans IMHO. He's legit. Still a little rough around the edges and tends to wanna take off and run when he should stick it out in the pocket ... but for a kid his size he can flat run, especially for a white boy.

We have to sign a good QB in every class. I do believe we're going to do that under mUSChamp with Dan Werner picking and choosing who he wants to go after.

To my knowledge, the Phommachanh kid from Connecticut is the only QB to be offered by Werner thus far. the other QB's with offers are Roper offers. However, Werner and Muschamp do seem to like Shrader and are putting a lot of eggs in that basket.

Gotcha. I'm not sure how hard we're recruiting QBs for 2019 besides Shrader.

The only reason I think it's ok if a QB doesn't sign for a given cycle is if a staff is able to get multiple worthy QB recruits signed in a recent previous cycle. Similar to what the taters have done the last few years. It literally makes no sense for Howell to sign with Clemson because I don't think he would even get to compete for the starting job until he was a RS junior or senior.

Which is, ideally, when you want a QB to come in and have to take over ... around his Junior year.

Matter of fact that used to be the standard and still is at most programs.

Apparently we had a huge and star-studded group of prospects that visited us this weekend. I don't know if it was a Junior Day or what, but names like Savion Jackson, Treveon Freshwater, Rashad Cheney, Garrett Shrader, Hakeem Beamon, Jadon Haselwood, Isaiah Ratcliff, Luke Doty, Anthony Harris, Travon Walker, Zion Puckett, Andrew Booth, etc.

Now apparently Coach Muschamp has tweeted his #SpursUp! Saturday night, but there's been no report yet of any commitment. Anyone heard about anything??

Apparently whoever this mystery #SpursUp belongs to will be making his announcement today via Twitter but no clue as to what time the "unveiling" is supposed to happen.

And some of those big names that visited the campus this weekend were apparently just "drop ins" that happened to be in the area and decided to stop by. Probably didn't hurt that DJ Swearinger was there visiting the team, as well.

This "drop-in" type weekend is going to become the new norm for us. I think I alluded-to-it in an earlier post about this staff planning on recruiting and building relationships 24/7/365 ... and this is all part of their strategy.

From what I understand there will rarely be a weekend during the spring, or summer, when practices are going-on when we do not have drop-in visits. It's being encouraged. It's a 180 from past staffs who didn't want to be bothered with putting on a show during practice periods.

It's going to pay huge dividends because the ones we're not seeing listed are the low profile 2020 and 2021 prospects who are coming-in and getting the grand tours from our support staff.

The whole philosophy is just incredible. mUSChamp figures, "Hey, we're here, come see us. We have incredible things to share with you about our changing culture and booming facilities."

He's sowing seeds early and as often as possible.

So I went to this dinner at the stadium last year during the off season and we were told to expect this. Recruiting year round, never stopping. Impressing the 14, 15, 16 year old kids right now ... giving them something to remember makes them want to come back and gives us an advantage when they turn 17 and 18.

This is exactly the case. Instead of doing one big junior day and running the risk of having it conflict with someone else's or something else a recruit has planned, they are having Junior days every weekend this spring. I have seen countless recruits on campus this spring walking around the Russell House or horseshoe etc. you can't be on campus around lunchtime on a Saturday and not see a recruit.

They are taking a similar approach with the spring game and Muschamp said as much in his presser, for those who missed it. He said we are having it this early for 2 reasons: 1) there is 0 competition to get guys on campus that weekend and 2) should someone get hurt like Jamarcus King did last year, they have nearly 2 months before camp starts to rehab and get back after it.

All I can say is Thank God for it. This is the kind of recruiting effort the program has always needed from its coaching staffs. Have some success in the program on the field, and then come behind it with heavy recruiting effort capitalizing on that success.

It won't turn a 7-8 win team into a 14-win team overnight, but it WILL help keep the team a 7-8 win team year after year, and pretty soon turn into a 9-10-11 win team with talented depth. Then come in behind THAT success and keep it going.

THEN before you know it, the team just might start winning 14 games in a season. But you have to keep dogging it, never kick back and become complacent, or it all starts to unravel. If you're staying still, you're going backwards. We've seen that work in IMAX 3-D definition over the last 2-3 seasons, last season not included.....

Keep it going Coaches.... Now, if we could just get the MBB staff to buy into that philosophy, although it looks like they are trying to. We'll see....

Picked up JT Ibe.

I like the addition, adding some experience to the safety room. Probably one of the more important things being experience as our D needs a smart and seasoned guy at safety like we had with Lammons last year.

Really hoping Steven Montac has a big year. It’s his time to shine.
